On Thursday morning, as the sun rose over Baton Rouge, the first day of school marked a homecoming for LaMont Cole, the newly appointed superintendent of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. As buses pulled up to Capitol Middle School, Cole stood at the ready, shaking hands with students and welcoming them with a smile. His return to this school was no accident—it was here, at Capitol Middle, where his educational journey began as a student and later as a teacher. Reflecting on his return, Cole’s actions mirror Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
A Leader Rooted in His Community
Cole’s deep connection to Capitol Middle School runs through his veins. In 1998, he began his teaching career at this very school, and in 2006, he returned as its principal. Known for his hands-on leadership, Cole positioned his desk in the school lobby, where he could see down almost every hallway—a testament to his commitment to transparency and vigilance. His dedication is reminiscent of Philippians 2:4, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Cole’s leadership is not just about administration but about nurturing the community he once called home.
Overcoming Challenges with Faith and Determination
This year, the stakes are high. The previous school year was marred by a transportation crisis that led to community unrest and the eventual resignation of the former superintendent. As Cole steps into his new role, he faces the daunting task of restoring trust and order in a district that has seen its share of turmoil. Yet, his resolve is unshaken, as echoed in Joshua 1:9, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the leadership and dedication of LaMont Cole as he returns to lead the Baton Rouge schools. We pray for wisdom, strength, and guidance as he navigates the challenges ahead. Bless the students, teachers, and staff as they embark on a new school year. May this community be united in purpose and filled with Your peace. Protect and guide them through every challenge, and may Your love be evident in all they do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
