Lafayette Educator Draws on Family Experience for Debut Children’s Book

A Journey of Courage

Lafayette High social studies teacher Jodie Lee has turned a personal family experience into a touching children’s book. Her daughter, Makenna, was diagnosed with alopecia at just 18 months old, a condition causing hair loss, including on her scalp. As Makenna approached preschool, Lee was concerned about how her new classmates would accept her and how she could help in this transition. Inspired by Makenna’s bravery, Lee wrote “Makenna’s Brave Start,” released on July 8, to highlight leadership, friendship, and kindness.

Inspired by Faith and Community Support

Lee, a long-time educator in the Rockwood School District, received immense support from her community while writing the book. “With this story being so close to my heart, I was very nervous about publishing it and sharing it with others,” she said. “The response has been so positive and reassuring.” The Bible teaches us in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Lee’s journey embodies this faith, showing how community support and personal strength can overcome challenges.

Building a Legacy of Inclusivity

Lee’s work is not only a book but the beginning of a movement. She plans for “Makenna’s Brave Start” to be the first in a “Different at School” book series, aiming to increase awareness and inspire students to celebrate their uniqueness. This initiative aligns with Romans 12:6, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” The series encourages strong leadership and highlights the bravery, courage, and kindness of students, showcasing differences in a positive light.

A Message of Bravery

Through her book, Lee hopes to inspire children to embrace their differences and find strength in their uniqueness. “I hope that people read the book and think, ‘Wow, she’s so brave,’” Lee said. Makenna’s story is a testament to the courage it takes to stand out and be different, especially at a young age. As Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Lee’s book aims to instill this courage in every reader.

A Prayer for the Community

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the courage and strength shown by Makenna and her family. We pray for all children who face challenges and differences, that they may find support and acceptance. Bless the educators and parents who strive to create inclusive and loving environments. May “Makenna’s Brave Start” inspire many to be brave and kind, celebrating the unique gifts You have given us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
