In a moment of divine blessing, the Opelousas-area community witnessed the celebration of the first significant construction project in the St. Landry School District in over three decades. This project, the Helix AI and Medical Academy, is set to open in 2025 and will offer students the opportunity to receive cutting-edge technical and medical training, equipping them for a future guided by God’s purpose.
A Partnership Guided by God’s Hand
School Superintendent Milton Batiste III addressed a large gathering, expressing that the groundbreaking of the Helix Academy represents a unique partnership among school officials, private industry, and individual investors. “I believe this is just the beginning of great things,” Batiste shared, acknowledging the Lord’s hand in this endeavor.
Visionary Planning Rooted in Faith
School Board President Mary Ellen Donatto reflected on the journey of faith that led to this day. Planning for the state-chartered Academy began over two years ago, adjacent to Our Savior’s Church, a spiritual beacon in the community. Donatto emphasized, “This is a special day. We have not often approved charter schools, but the Helix Academy is an exception, one that we believe is blessed by God.”
From a Dream to Reality Through God’s Grace

Preston Castille, CEO and President of Helix school campuses, recalled how the vision for the Academy began shortly after voters rejected a bond issue to build new schools in Opelousas. Through a God-inspired conversation in 2022 with Opelousas businessman Pat Fontenot and state representative Dustin Miller, the idea of the Helix Academy was born—a project that would bring new hope and opportunity to the community.

Blessings from the Faithful
The creation of the Academy would not have been possible without the generous support of faithful believers. Our Savior’s Church provided land for the school, while monetary donations from private and corporate sponsors, such as Kurt Schumacher and Reggie Dupre, furthered the mission. These acts of kindness reflect the love of Christ in action.
A Bright Future with God’s Guidance

Louisiana Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley praised the 42,000 square-foot Helix Academy building, which will offer a curriculum focused on science, computers, and medicine—fields that align with the talents God has given each student. “Students will be exposed to project-based and cutting-edge learning that is relevant in our increasingly advanced society. It’s a groundbreaking opportunity educationally as well as spiritually,” Brumley noted.
A Day of Joy and Hope
State Representative Dustin Miller expressed his joy, saying, “This is an amazing day. Our children deserve this chance to learn and to receive a foundation in AI, guided by Christian values.” The school’s creation is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together in faith.
Expanding the Vision in Faith
Founding Principal Jennifer Gordon announced that the school will eventually expand to include grades six through eight, with applications beginning in October. This expansion reflects the Academy’s commitment to providing a Christ-centered education to even more students.
A City Blessed by God’s Favor
Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor noted that the Academy’s completion is a milestone in the city’s development, particularly along the I-49 corridor. The school represents more than just a building; it symbolizes the blessings of God upon the city, offering students skills and opportunities that were unavailable in past generations.
