Grace—True As Ever: Finding Hope in the Midst of Suffering

Life is full of trials that often seem impossible to overcome, but for those who trust in God’s plan, there is always hope. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This powerful verse speaks to the truth that even in our most difficult circumstances, God is working behind the scenes, turning struggles into opportunities for growth and glory.

A Life of Hardship and Grace

Growing up in a broken home, I faced challenges that most would consider insurmountable. Raised in an alcoholic household and surrounded by the pain of my mother’s seven marriages and divorces, it seemed like I was destined for failure. The statistics didn’t lie—children of divorced parents often repeat the cycle. But by God’s grace, my story took a different turn. I gave my life to Christ in high school, and by His strength, I celebrated my thirty-fifth wedding anniversary with my wife. This, despite the odds, was a testimony of God’s redemptive power.

Finding Meaning Through Tragedy

As I shared my life story in a film called Lost Boy, I spoke of Joseph from the Bible, who faced many hardships yet found God’s purpose in them. But in July 2008, tragedy struck: our 33-year-old son, Christopher, was killed in a car crash. I found myself grappling with the question: How could anything good come from this? In that moment of grief, we held onto the message of the film—the belief that God can bring good out of even the worst circumstances. The truth of Romans 8:28 didn’t waver, even in the depths of our sorrow.

God’s Grace in Every Circumstance

Though we didn’t choose this painful chapter, we knew that God’s grace and faithfulness would continue to shine through. Just as He brought good out of Joseph’s suffering, He continues to bring hope to our family. Our story, though filled with pain, is still a story of grace—a story where God turns the worst situations into opportunities to display His glory.

A Prayer for Strength and Hope

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unwavering grace, even in our darkest moments. We trust that You are working all things for our good, no matter how painful the journey may be. Help us to find peace in Your plan, knowing that You bring beauty from ashes. May we cling to Your promises, especially when life seems unbearable. Please bring comfort and healing to all who are struggling, and let Your light shine through every heartache. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
