Navigating Culinary School Blind: Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

Cody Fontenot’s story is one of resilience, independence, and the pursuit of his dreams. Born prematurely at 27 weeks, Cody lost his eyesight at just two months old due to detached retinas. Despite this, he has always been taught that there is nothing he cannot do. “We always taught him that he could do anything anyone else could do, except legally drive,” says his mother, Melanie Winters. Cody’s unyielding desire for independence has been his driving force, much like Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Challenges in the Classroom: A Struggle for Accessibility

As a student at SOWELA Technical Community College in Lake Charles, Cody is majoring in culinary arts—a field that requires both precision and passion. However, he faces a unique challenge: accessing his course materials. Louisiana Rehabilitation Services (LRS) provides funding for readers for blind students, but finding the right reader is not always straightforward. “If you don’t have that person, it affects your grades,” Cody explains. This situation mirrors the struggles mentioned in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'”

While SOWELA aims to provide reasonable accommodations, the burden to find a suitable reader still rests on Cody. “Our goal is independence for the student,” says Allison Dering, SOWELA’s Executive Director of Enrollment Management. Yet, without the right support, even the most determined student like Cody can face significant setbacks.

Finding Hope Through Community Support

Despite the challenges, Cody’s persistence paid off when his mother shared his struggle on Facebook. Through this post, he was able to connect with a reader who now helps him with his schoolwork and provides transportation to campus. This story highlights the power of community and support. As Romans 12:10 reminds us, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

A Prayer for Cody and His Community

Lord, we lift up Cody Fontenot and all those who face challenges in their educational journeys. May You continue to guide him with strength and perseverance as he pursues his dreams in culinary arts. We pray that You bless those who help him, and may his story inspire others to support and uplift one another. Lord, we trust that with Your grace, all obstacles can be overcome, and we ask for continued wisdom and encouragement for Cody, his family, and his community. Amen.
