LAFAYETTE, La. — While many spend Saturdays resting, the St. Thomas More Catholic High School football team and student body dedicate their time to serving others. For the 12th consecutive year, students have united for Canstruction, a large-scale food drive benefiting Catholic Charities of Acadiana and FoodNet Food Bank, providing hope for families across multiple parishes.
Faith in Action Through Service
This year’s event collected more than 20,000 canned goods, a testimony to the generosity of the entire school community. Senior wide receiver Kyle Guillot called the effort “a great opportunity to show what our community can do.” The project reflects the words of Matthew 25:35: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.” Students are reminded that true discipleship means serving those in need.
A Tradition of Compassion
The football team has long embraced this tradition, with seniors like Andrew Broussard recognizing both the blessing and responsibility of service. “We’re very honored and blessed to come serve those that can’t help themselves,” Broussard said. The transformation from empty pallets to more than 22,000 donated goods deeply moved first-time participants, highlighting the impact of collective effort. Galatians 5:13 echoes this spirit: “Serve one another humbly in love.”
Building a Culture of Hope
With one in five Louisiana households at risk of hunger, Canstruction is more than a food drive—it is a ministry of hope. Ben Broussard of Catholic Charities expressed gratitude, noting that the STM community’s generosity represents more than a thousand students, faculty, and families. Together, they embody Christ’s call to love our neighbors.
A Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, thank You for the students, teachers, and families of St. Thomas More. Bless their efforts to feed the hungry and inspire others to serve with compassion. May this example of faith in action continue to shine Your love throughout our community. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
