Abbeville celebrates 75th annual cattle festival

A Celebration of Heritage and Blessing
ABBEVILLE, La. — The people of Abbeville are rejoicing this weekend as the 75th Louisiana Cattle Festival brings together generations to celebrate faith, community, and Cajun culture. What began as the Louisiana Dairy Festival in 1949 has evolved into a vibrant testimony of Louisiana’s agricultural heritage and the hardworking families who keep it alive. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

Honoring the Roots of a Faithful Community
Festival honoree Barbara Horaist has been part of this cherished event since before she was born. Her father, Roy Theriot, helped found the festival, and her mother’s devotion to the community helped it thrive. “She would actually walk the streets of Abbeville picking up donations,” Horaist recalled, a reflection of the servant-hearted spirit that has sustained this celebration through generations. This echoes the words of Proverbs 11:25 — “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Faith, Fellowship, and Cajun Joy
Today, the Louisiana Cattle Festival continues to unite hearts through fais do-do dances, rib-eating contests, and family fellowship, all rooted in the Cajun spirit of joy and gratitude. Horaist says she loves seeing “people having fun,” a reminder that “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). Each song, meal, and moment shared honors both God’s provision and the cultural heritage that defines southern Louisiana.

A Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the people of Abbeville and for 75 years of fellowship, tradition, and joy. Bless the farmers, ranchers, and families who labor faithfully to provide for others. May this festival continue to shine as a beacon of unity, gratitude, and love for generations to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
