LAFAYETTE, La. — In a remarkable display of skill, perseverance, and teamwork, St. Thomas More High School claimed their fifth consecutive Division II State Championship on Saturday at the Cajundome, defeating St. Scholastica 3-1. This victory marks the Cougars’ tenth state title in just 14 years, a testament not only to athletic excellence but to dedication, discipline, and community support. As 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God,” these young athletes exemplify faith-infused effort both on and off the court.
Celebrating a Legacy of Dedication
Head Coach Jessica Burke praised her players, saying, “I am so proud of these players. These seniors have been incredible. You don’t win state championships without great senior culture.” Indeed, the Cougars’ success is rooted in a culture of commitment, humility, and teamwork—qualities that mirror biblical principles of stewardship and perseverance. Galatians 6:9 encourages believers, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Through seasons of practice, games, and challenges, these young athletes have sown seeds of discipline and unity that have borne fruit on the state stage.
Marvel Potier Shines as Most Outstanding Player
Central to the Cougars’ championship run was Marvel Potier, who was named Most Outstanding Player of the match. Potier recorded a team-high 10 blocks, demonstrating not only skill but a heart for teamwork and leadership. Her efforts exemplify the biblical call to serve one another with excellence. Colossians 3:23 instructs, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Potier’s dedication reflects a commitment to glorifying God through talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Country Day Volleyball Continues Its Winning Streak
Earlier on Saturday, Country Day’s volleyball team secured the Division V state championship, sweeping Central Catholic in three straight sets. This victory marks their tenth consecutive state title, highlighting the sustained commitment and focus of the players, coaches, and supporting community. Their success underscores the principle of stewardship over one’s gifts, as taught in Matthew 25:21: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master.” These student-athletes are living examples of how diligence and faith can lead to excellence and lasting impact.
A Community United in Celebration and Faith
Both St. Thomas More and Country Day exemplify how athletics can foster character, faith, and community engagement. Families, coaches, and local supporters gathered to celebrate not just the wins, but the growth, resilience, and teamwork of these young athletes. Their victories serve as a reminder that honoring God in all endeavors—on the court, in the classroom, and in life—yields lasting blessings and sets a standard for future generations.
A Prayer for the Athletes and Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the dedication, talent, and perseverance of the student-athletes at St. Thomas More and Country Day. Bless their families, coaches, and communities who support them in every step. May their victories inspire others to honor You in their gifts and endeavors. Continue to guide these young leaders in humility, integrity, and faith, both on and off the court. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
