According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 2.9 earthquake was recorded at 6:47 a.m. today near Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. The quake originated at a depth of approximately 5 kilometers. There were no reports of injuries or property damage, and none would be expected given the relatively low magnitude of the event.
USGS data indicate that earthquakes measuring 2.0 or less are rarely felt by people. As magnitudes exceed 2.0, shaking becomes more noticeable. While minor damage is possible around magnitude 3.0, significant damage and casualties typically do not occur unless an earthquake reaches magnitude 5.5 or greater.
Recent Seismic Activity in the Area
Today’s quake occurred near the locations of two recent earthquakes. On December 4 and December 11, a magnitude 2.7 earthquake was recorded near Coushatta, approximately 10 miles northwest of today’s epicenter.
Earthquakes Are Uncommon in Louisiana
According to the Louisiana Geological Survey and Louisiana State University, earthquakes—especially stronger ones—are rare in Louisiana. The largest known earthquake in the state’s history occurred on October 19, 1930, with an estimated magnitude of 4.2, awakening residents in New Orleans. The epicenter of that historic quake is believed to have been near Donaldsonville.
