A New Sound of Fellowship Rooted in Faith and Heritage
A powerful blend of music, culture, and community is taking root in St. Landry Parish as monthly Zydeco Jam sessions launch at NUNU Arts & Culture Collective. Beginning Saturday, March 21, and continuing every third Saturday, the free gatherings are designed to unite generations through the rich tradition of Zydeco music. Led by young musician Israel Chaisson, also known as Zydeco Izreal, the initiative reflects a deeper calling to preserve culture while fostering community. As Scripture reminds us in Psalm 150:4, “Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre,” highlighting how music has long been a vessel for worship and connection.
A Vision to Preserve Culture Through Community
At just 18 years old, Chaisson is stepping boldly into a role of leadership, creating a space where musicians of all ages and skill levels can gather, learn, and grow together. The Zydeco Jams are not formal performances but open, acoustic sessions where participants share rhythms, stories, and traditions passed down through generations. This model reflects the biblical principle found in 2 Timothy 2:2, which encourages believers to entrust knowledge to others who will continue teaching. In much the same way, these jam sessions serve as a living classroom, ensuring that Louisiana’s Creole musical heritage is not lost but lovingly passed on.
Chaisson emphasizes that true learning happens in community—by listening, observing, and participating. His passion echoes a desire not only to preserve music but to strengthen the bonds that hold communities together.
A Rare and Valuable Tradition
Zydeco jam sessions have become increasingly rare across Louisiana, with only a handful taking place statewide each month. This reality adds urgency and importance to the effort unfolding in Arnaudville. At NUNU, a recognized hub for artists and culture bearers, the jam sessions are deeply rooted in a legacy of preservation and celebration.
The gatherings offer something unique: unpredictability and authenticity. Musicians never know who might walk through the doors—an experienced player ready to mentor or a beginner eager to learn. This spirit of openness mirrors the teaching of Hebrews 10:24–25, which calls believers to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together.” In these moments, music becomes more than sound—it becomes ministry through fellowship.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of the central goals of the Zydeco Jam series is to inspire younger generations to connect with their cultural roots. In a fast-paced world where traditions can easily fade, these gatherings provide a space where history comes alive. Young musicians are given the opportunity to sit alongside seasoned players, learning not from textbooks but from experience and relationship.
Held from 2 to 4 p.m., each session invites the community to come as they are—whether bringing an instrument or simply a listening ear. Food and beverages from Café NUNU add to the welcoming atmosphere, making the event a place of both nourishment and joy.
As the rhythms of Zydeco fill the space, they carry with them a message of unity, resilience, and shared identity—reminding all who attend that God often works through culture and community to draw people together.
A Living Expression of Faith and Fellowship
In Arnaudville, the Zydeco Jam is more than an event—it is a living testimony of how traditions can unite hearts across generations. Through music, mentorship, and shared experience, this initiative reflects the beauty of God-given gifts used to uplift and connect His people.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of music and the rich cultural heritage found in Louisiana. We lift up Israel Chaisson and all those participating in these Zydeco Jam sessions. Bless their efforts to preserve tradition and build community. May every note played bring joy, unity, and encouragement. Inspire the next generation to honor their roots while walking in Your truth. Strengthen the bonds of fellowship, and let Your presence be felt in every gathering. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
