CAST NEWS — As many Louisiana families continue facing financial hardship and rising living expenses, local nonprofit organizations and government agencies in St. Landry Parish and Evangeline Parish are being encouraged to apply for federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program funding designed to support those struggling with hunger and housing insecurity.
The federal funding, administered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and overseen locally by the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way, aims to strengthen existing emergency food and shelter programs already serving vulnerable residents throughout both parishes.
According to local officials, Evangeline Parish has been awarded $9,681 in Phase 42 EFSP funding, while St. Landry Parish will receive $28,286 to help support community relief efforts.
Helping Communities Meet Growing Needs
Leaders with the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way say the need for emergency assistance continues to grow as many households struggle to keep up with housing costs, groceries, and basic necessities.
“This program has made a substantial contribution to our local shelters and food banks over the years,” Executive Director Ginger LeCompte said. “It is especially needed now, due to so many people struggling to make ends meet.”
The funding cannot be used to create new programs but is specifically intended to expand and supplement existing food banks, shelters, and emergency assistance services already operating within the community.
Faith leaders throughout Acadiana say programs like EFSP reflect the biblical call to care for those in need. Proverbs 19:17 teaches, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done.”
Churches and ministries across the region often partner with local nonprofits to distribute food, assist struggling families, and provide temporary shelter during difficult seasons. Many community leaders say federal and local partnerships can help extend those outreach efforts even further.
Requirements for Agencies Seeking Assistance
Organizations interested in applying for the funding must meet national EFSP requirements established by the program’s governing board. Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations or government agencies capable of delivering emergency food and shelter services.
Applicants must also maintain proper accounting systems, practice nondiscrimination, demonstrate financial accountability, and, if operating as a private nonprofit, maintain a volunteer board.
Officials are strongly encouraging qualifying organizations in both parishes to apply before the June 12 deadline to ensure the funding reaches as many struggling residents as possible.
Community advocates say the grants often provide essential support for food pantries, shelters, utility assistance programs, and emergency relief ministries already serving local families.
Faith Communities Continue Answering the Call
Local pastors say times of financial strain often reveal the strength of a community’s compassion and faith. Many churches continue organizing food drives, benevolence programs, and outreach efforts to help families facing unemployment, inflation, or unexpected hardship.
Matthew 25:35 reminds believers of Christ’s words: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
Community leaders say the EFSP funding represents more than financial assistance — it is an opportunity for agencies, churches, and volunteers to work together in serving neighbors with dignity and care.
Applications for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program are available through the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way website, and additional information may be obtained by contacting the organization directly.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we pray for the families in St. Landry and Evangeline parishes who are facing hunger, financial hardship, and uncertainty. Bless the nonprofit organizations, churches, volunteers, and community leaders working tirelessly to care for those in need. Provide wisdom for agencies distributing these resources and comfort for every person seeking help during difficult times. May Your love shine through every act of compassion and generosity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
