A Lifetime of Service Leads to City Hall
BREAUX BRIDGE, La. — As Breaux Bridge prepares for a new administration in January, longtime attorney and public servant Chester Cedars is getting ready to assume the role of mayor, bringing with him five decades of experience in law, government, and community leadership.
Cedars, who was unopposed in the mayoral race, has spent much of his career serving the people of St. Martin Parish. His résumé includes 25 years as attorney for the St. Martin Parish School Board, approximately 12 years as city attorney for Breaux Bridge, nearly 20 years as the parish’s chief prosecutor, and service as St. Martin Parish president.
On the same day he reflected on his upcoming role as mayor, Cedars also marked a significant personal milestone—50 years since receiving his license to practice law. His extensive experience has given him a unique perspective on how local government directly impacts the daily lives of residents.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Rather than pursuing dramatic changes, Cedars says his goal is to continue the progress already underway in Breaux Bridge while preparing the city for future growth and success.
Among the projects he hopes to see advance are the planned Mills Avenue and Champagne Boulevard expansions. Cedars emphasized the importance of not only beginning major infrastructure projects but also ensuring funding and planning are in place for future phases.
His approach reflects the wisdom found in Luke 14:28, where Jesus teaches the importance of careful planning: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost?” Cedars’ focus on preparation and long-term planning demonstrates a commitment to responsible stewardship of public resources.
By continuing successful initiatives while preparing for what comes next, he hopes to position Breaux Bridge for sustainable growth in the years ahead.
Focusing on Infrastructure and Community Needs
One of Cedars’ first priorities will be evaluating the city’s infrastructure. He plans to begin with assessments of the water and sewer systems and then examine city streets to determine what improvements may be needed.
He believes understanding the current condition of these essential services is necessary before making decisions about future investments. Such evaluations can help city leaders identify needs, estimate costs, and develop strategic plans for improvements.
The Bible speaks often about stewardship and caring for what has been entrusted to us. In 1 Corinthians 4:2, Scripture states, “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” Cedars’ desire to carefully assess and maintain city infrastructure reflects this principle of faithful stewardship.
Residents throughout Breaux Bridge depend on reliable roads, water systems, and public services, making infrastructure planning a critical component of local government.
Preparing for Growth and Emergencies
Economic development and emergency preparedness are also key priorities for the incoming mayor. Cedars hopes to strengthen communication with developers while maintaining the standards established by previous city leadership.
At the same time, he wants Breaux Bridge to be better prepared for hurricanes and other emergencies by securing contracts with service providers before disasters occur. Having those relationships in place ahead of time could help the city respond more effectively when residents need assistance most.
His commitment to preparation echoes Proverbs 27:12: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” Planning ahead can help protect lives, property, and community resources during difficult times.
A Career Dedicated to Community
After 50 years in the legal profession and a lifetime of public service, Cedars says he views the mayor’s office as an opportunity to give back to the community that has supported him throughout his career.
For him, serving as mayor is not simply another position—it is the culmination of decades spent working on behalf of the people of St. Martin Parish. As Breaux Bridge looks toward the future, many residents are hopeful that his experience, leadership, and commitment to service will help guide the city through its next chapter.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for leaders who are willing to serve their communities with dedication and integrity. We pray for Chester Cedars as he prepares to take office and for all elected officials entrusted with public service. Grant them wisdom, discernment, and humility as they make decisions affecting the lives of others. Bless the people of Breaux Bridge, strengthen their community, and guide future growth and development. May Your peace and protection rest upon the city and its residents. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
