LAFAYETTE, La. — As Thanksgiving approaches, the Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Parks, Arts, Recreation, and Culture Department (PARC) is calling on residents, businesses, churches, and community organizations to help bring hope and nourishment to families facing hardship this holiday season.
Returning for its second year, the PARCsGiving initiative aims to assemble at least 100 Thanksgiving meal baskets for families in need throughout Lafayette Parish. Organizers are accepting non-perishable food donations through November 6, encouraging the community to embrace the spirit of generosity and ensure more families can gather around the table for Thanksgiving.
For Christians, the effort reflects the biblical call to love our neighbors and care for those experiencing difficult circumstances. Hebrews 13:16 reminds believers not to neglect doing good and sharing with others, describing such sacrifices as pleasing to God.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Through Generosity
PARC Director Byron Starks said the initiative is designed to unite the community around a shared purpose: helping local families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
“PARCsGiving is all about neighbors helping neighbors and making sure more families in our community can gather around the table and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal,” Starks said. He also expressed enthusiasm for the campaign’s return and hope that community participation will help reach even more families.
The initiative offers an opportunity for people from all walks of life to make a meaningful difference. Whether donating groceries, organizing a collection at work, or encouraging a church congregation to participate, every contribution can help strengthen the community.
In Acts 20:35, Scripture reminds believers of the blessing found in giving. PARCsGiving provides a practical way to live out that principle by turning individual acts of kindness into a collective effort to support families in need.
Food Donations Can Help Fill Thanksgiving Tables
Community members are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items that will be assembled into Thanksgiving meal baskets. Suggested donations include one- to two-pound bags of rice, canned green beans, canned corn, cornbread mix, and dessert ingredients such as cake mix, brownie mix, or pie filling and crust.
Organizers also welcome handwritten notes of encouragement. These simple messages provide a no-cost opportunity for students, senior citizens, and others to participate, reminding recipient families that their community cares about them.
Proverbs 19:17 teaches that kindness shown to the poor is honored by the Lord. Beyond providing food, a thoughtful note can communicate compassion and offer encouragement to someone who may be experiencing financial stress or uncertainty during the holidays.

November 20: A Day of Giving and Thanksgiving Hope
The Thanksgiving meal baskets will be distributed on Friday, November 20, 2026, beginning at 4 p.m. at Domingue Recreation Center, located at 901 Mudd Avenue in Lafayette. Distribution will operate on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
As Lafayette prepares for the holiday season, PARCsGiving reminds residents that Thanksgiving is not only a time to express gratitude but also an opportunity to share blessings with others. Through generosity, service, and compassion, the community can help ensure that more families experience the warmth of a Thanksgiving gathering.
PRAYER FOR LAFAYETTE FAMILIES AND THE PARCSGIVING CAMPAIGN
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the opportunity to serve our neighbors and share the blessings You have entrusted to us. We lift up every family in Lafayette Parish facing food insecurity, financial hardship, or uncertainty this Thanksgiving.
Lord, bless the PARC department, the organizers, volunteers, donors, churches, businesses, and everyone working to make PARCsGiving a success. Multiply every contribution, provide the resources needed to reach families in need, and encourage those who may feel forgotten or overwhelmed.
May every Thanksgiving basket bring nourishment, comfort, and hope. Help us remember that generosity is an expression of Your love and that even the smallest act of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
As 2 Corinthians 9:7 teaches, may we give willingly and cheerfully. Unite our community in compassion, strengthen families, and help every household experience the warmth of fellowship and gratitude.
In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
