Is “The Manifestation” a psychological thriller or a spiritual parable? Directed by Calvin University professor Geert Heetebrij, this independent faith-based film aims to straddle both genres.
Day trader Stephen (Jack Kesy) risks his family’s savings on speculative bets in pursuit of success through “manifestation.” While the persistent, suspenseful music heightens the tension, it occasionally feels contrived. The villain, guru Michael (Usman Ally), ensnares Stephen and his wife (Inbar Lavi) with messages like “Aspire! You are your own creator! Reject negative visualization! Say what you want!”
In a dilapidated office envisioned as a luxurious suite, Stephen declares, “I want to be successful.” Soon, his manifestation takes on a persona—an evil doppelganger of his wife. This counterpart embodies Stephen’s true desires, leading him astray. Meanwhile, his real wife distances herself from his instability as he attempts to win her back with extravagant gifts, losing sight of what truly matters.
“The Manifestation” draws on horror and surreal elements like doppelgangers and jump scares, eschewing the typical tidy resolutions of faith-based films for a descent into darkness. Its explicit themes caution against the dangers of idolatry, avoiding preachiness but sacrificing some storytelling depth. While featuring violence, the film lacks the gritty realism found in top-tier horror, leaving viewers feeling like the darkness has been illuminated by a night light.
