Ragin’ Cajuns Celebrate Seventh Consecutive National Water Ski Championship

A Historic Victory Marks Excellence, Perseverance and Teamwork

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns Water Ski Team has achieved another remarkable milestone, capturing its seventh consecutive Division I national championship and bringing its historic total to 13 national titles. The victory came at the Syndicate 2026 National Collegiate Water Ski Association (NCWSA) National Championships, held October 15–17 in Rio Linda, California.

From a Christian faith perspective, this achievement offers an opportunity to reflect on perseverance, discipline and the power of working together toward a common goal. Scripture reminds believers in Colossians 3:23, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (KJV). The Ragin’ Cajuns’ continued success demonstrates the value of dedication and commitment in pursuing excellence.

An Unprecedented Championship Streak

The seven consecutive national championships represent the longest championship streak in the NCWSA since the University of Louisiana at Lafayette joined the association in 1988, according to head coach Ryan Gonzales. The team has maintained an undefeated championship run dating back to 2019, with the 2020 competition canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The university’s water ski program has now claimed national titles in 1995, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Although water skiing is a club sport rather than an NCAA-sanctioned program, its accomplishments have established it as the most decorated championship team in the university’s history.

The achievement echoes the biblical encouragement found in Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (KJV).

Student-Athletes Shine on the National Stage

Individual performances played a significant role in the team’s championship victory. Alana Jones, a Lafayette native with deep family ties to the program, captured the women’s slalom national championship. Her grandfather, Jim Davidson, founded the team, while her parents, Scot and Lynda Jones, competed for the Ragin’ Cajuns before later coaching the program.

Other outstanding performances included Megan Pelkey’s second-place finish in women’s overall and third-place finish in women’s tricks, while Katharina Hafner earned third place in women’s jump.

In the men’s division, BG Bickley secured second place in jump and third in overall. Alexander Gschiel finished third in jump, while Florian Parth placed fifth. Vincent Ahammer earned fourth in men’s tricks, followed by Jack Silver in fifth. Gschiel and Parth also tied for fourth in men’s slalom.

These accomplishments reflect the principle of unity described in 1 Corinthians 12:12, which teaches that many members form one body. Every athlete’s contribution matters, whether through individual victories or supporting the team’s collective mission.

Coaches Celebrate Dedication and Unity

Assistant coach Harry Spavin described the championship as a true team effort, recognizing the student-athletes’ hard work, dedication and ability to overcome challenges together.

His remarks underscore an important Christian lesson: success is often built through service, encouragement and a willingness to stand alongside others. Philippians 2:4 urges believers to look beyond their own interests and consider the interests of others.

For the Lafayette community, the championship represents more than a trophy. It is a reminder that perseverance, mentorship and unity can produce extraordinary results. The athletes’ achievement also provides an opportunity to celebrate young people who demonstrate discipline, resilience and commitment.

A Prayer for the Community and Student-Athletes

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the Ragin’ Cajuns Water Ski Team, its coaches, student-athletes, families and supporters. Thank You for the gifts, determination and opportunities that made this historic championship possible.

Lord, protect these young men and women as they continue their athletic and academic journeys. Give them humility in victory, courage in adversity and gratitude for the people who support them. Bless the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the Lafayette community with unity, hope and continued opportunities to encourage young people.

We also pray for everyone facing hardship, grief or uncertainty. May they find strength in Your promises and comfort in Your presence. Help us remember that our greatest victories are not measured by trophies alone, but by the love, integrity and faith we demonstrate along the way.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
