Vermilion Catholic Grad Shares Story of Resilience and Faith After Grueling Car Accident

Kallen LeBlanc, a recent graduate of Vermilion Catholic, delivered a moving speech to the sophomore class during a recent Catholic retreat. LeBlanc, who defied the odds after a harrowing car accident last year, shared her story of perseverance and the unwavering faith that guided her through recovery.

“On July 8, 2023, I was in a severe car accident,” LeBlanc began. “I was so close to my destination that my cousin could hear the collision.” The accident left LeBlanc with a bruised lung, fractured ribs, pelvis, and vertebrae. Airlifted to Lafayette General Hospital, she described the struggle to breathe, “They quickly intubated me, which meant they placed a long, thick tube down my throat into my lungs.”

Despite initial progress, LeBlanc’s recovery stalled. “After two weeks in the hospital, I was not progressing,” she shared. Doctors opted for a specialized treatment unavailable at Lafayette General, leading to her transfer to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas for ECMO, a procedure that bypasses the lungs to allow them to heal.

LeBlanc emphasized the role of faith in her recovery, “I believe that the community around me and the prayers of my family and friends allowed me to shorten my time on the machine to five days.” She credited the support system that surrounded her, “Having the support from all of these people around me made this process so much easier for me, as I could go through the day knowing that there was always someone there to help me.”

The road to recovery was challenging. “I dealt with a lot of emotional struggles, having to relearn physical movements I had used my entire life,” LeBlanc recounted. Physical, speech, and occupational therapy became her new routine. “This experience has solidified my belief in God’s love and protection,” she declared. “I took God for granted at most points in my life…The miracles that worked throughout my healing made me realize that God was necessary.”

LeBlanc’s story serves as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity. Her unwavering faith and the unwavering support of her community became the pillars upon which she rebuilt her life. Inspired by the exceptional care she received, LeBlanc now plans to pursue a nursing degree at UL-Lafayette this fall.
