A New Era for Filmmaking Salt Lake City Community College (SLCC) has introduced a groundbreaking virtual production stage, revolutionizing how films are made and taught. This 31-foot-wide by 18-foot-high LED panel wall, known as the Taylor Virtual Production Stage, allows filmmakers to create realistic environments without the need for traditional green screens or on-location shooting.
The Power of Innovation “The project started two years ago, embracing this new technology that is essentially replacing green screen technology,” said SLCC documentary professor Tyler Smith. The new stage allows actors to interact with real-time environments, enhancing their performances while capturing photorealistic visuals. Such advancements align with Proverbs 4:7, which reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
A Transformational Tool for Students SLCC’s film students now have the opportunity to work with technology used in major productions such as The Mandalorian and Black Panther. Associate Professor Channing Lowe emphasized the importance of training students in virtual production, as the demand for skilled professionals in this field is rapidly growing. “Our goal is to get students trained so they can get jobs in virtual production,” Lowe said. Ecclesiastes 9:10 encourages us in this pursuit: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”
Bringing Innovation to Louisiana With the success of this cutting-edge technology at SLCC, there is hope that Louisiana schools and universities could soon implement similar advancements in their film and media programs. As Louisiana continues to be a hub for film production, integrating this technology could open new doors for aspiring filmmakers and media professionals in the state.
A Prayer for Innovation and Growth Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of creativity and innovation. We pray for students and educators embracing this new filmmaking technology, that they may use it to inspire and uplift others. May opportunities arise for this technology to expand to schools and universities in Louisiana, allowing more students to learn and grow in this evolving industry. Let this be a tool for storytelling that honors truth and excellence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
