As believers, we are reminded that this world is not our ultimate home. Philippians 3:20 (NLT) says, “But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.” Our faith in Jesus Christ grants us citizenship in heaven, a place that is far beyond the comforts and distractions of this world. This truth shapes our daily lives, creating in us a longing for something far greater than anything earth can offer.
A Deep Longing for More
In our daily lives, we often experience a deep, unshakable longing that earthly pleasures cannot satisfy. Whether it’s the pursuit of material success or fleeting happiness, we often find ourselves feeling disillusioned. Like the old song says, “This world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through.” We’re not meant to find ultimate fulfillment here. The things of this world leave us cold because our true desire lies elsewhere—in a place we can only imagine. As C.S. Lewis once said, “The secret signature of each soul is the incommunicable and unappeasable want,” which he believed was a longing for heaven. This yearning within us is a homing instinct that pulls us toward our eternal home with God.
Heaven: The Ultimate Destination
Just like some animals instinctively migrate to specific destinations, we too have a spiritual GPS that points us home—to heaven. In our hearts, we know that the best is yet to come. There’s an eternal peace and joy waiting for us, and it’s even more real when we think about loved ones who are already there. Although we experience joy and fulfillment here on earth, the certainty that heaven awaits us makes everything in this life more meaningful.
A Prayer for Longing and Hope
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the hope we have in heaven, our true home. Help us to live each day with our eyes fixed on the eternal, knowing that the best is yet to come. May we find peace in Your promises and draw strength from the assurance that our true citizenship is with You. Guide us through the challenges of this world and remind us of the joy that awaits. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
