On the last Saturday of each month, the Louisiana Marketshops at 115 come alive with the aroma of Creole cooking, thanks to Toni “Shug” Jones. A retired educator and social worker, Shug shares her culinary expertise with the community, creating dishes that reflect her deep love for food and people. Originally from New Orleans, Shug’s passion for cooking began in her grandmother’s kitchen, where she learned the art of seasoning and care in food preparation. “My grandmother would put her chicken in the pot, she’d give me the little feet and a wing, and I’d put that in my pot. She’d season, and she’d pass it to me, then I’d season,” Shug recalls fondly. This foundational experience instilled in her the love for cooking that she still carries today.
Cooking with Love and Dedication
Shug’s philosophy in the kitchen is rooted in the belief that cooking should be done with love and attention to detail. “I don’t just take a pound of beans and throw everything in at once,” she says. “It’s in stages.” This care and dedication are evident in the delicious dishes she creates. Just as the Bible teaches us in Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” Shug embodies this spirit of wholehearted effort in everything she prepares, ensuring that her cooking is a reflection of love and commitment.
A New Chapter in Breaux Bridge
After Hurricane Katrina damaged her home, Shug moved to Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, where she began a new chapter in her life. She reflects, “It’s been very rewarding and there’s not much more that I could ask for.” Her move to this sweet town has allowed her to continue sharing her gifts with the people she loves. Beyond cooking, Shug also works as a licensed social worker and teacher, spreading knowledge wherever she goes. Her passion for teaching aligns with the wisdom found in Proverbs 4:7, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”
A Queen in Her Kitchen
When asked if she feels like the queen of her kitchen, Shug’s answer is clear: “I’m the queen of my kitchen, I tell you that!” And rightfully so—her culinary expertise and warm spirit have earned her this title. Shug has even created her own seasoning, further solidifying her place as a culinary royalty. “I was doing something that I could share with people, that they enjoy, and that’s my joy,” she says, emphasizing the importance of sharing food and love with others.
A Prayer for Blessings
Lord, we thank You for Toni “Shug” Jones and the gifts You have given her. May her passion for cooking and teaching continue to inspire those around her. We ask for Your blessings upon the community of Breaux Bridge and all those who share in her meals and wisdom. May the love and joy she spreads in her kitchen overflow into every corner of her life. Lord, help us to cook and live with love, just as You have loved us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
