Melba Braud: A Legacy of Education and Community Impact

This Women’s History Month, we honor the incredible legacy of Melba Braud, a trailblazer in education whose contributions have left an indelible mark on St. Martinville and the state of Louisiana. Braud made history as the first Black assistant professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL), shaping the academic and social landscape of the region for decades.

A Journey Driven by Curiosity and Service

Braud’s passion for education began with an innate curiosity. “I didn’t really have a vision when I was small, I was just so curious about everything,” she recalls. Growing up in a family of educators, with both her mother and grandmother serving as schoolteachers, Braud was inspired to continue the tradition. Despite the challenges of being one of the first Black educators in a predominantly white setting, Braud’s determination to make a difference drove her forward. “I had to teach the young white kids how to conduct business so they embraced me,” she reflects. Her dedication to education was evident in every classroom she touched.

Championing Diversity and Empowerment

Beyond the classroom, Braud played a pivotal role in shaping the future of her community. From 1959 to 1988, she served as a professor at UL Lafayette, where she helped establish the first chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) at the university. Her advocacy for inclusivity and equal representation extended to her involvement in the creation of the St. Martinville African American Museum, where she ensured the African American community’s history was honored.

A Lasting Legacy of Service and Unity

Braud’s commitment to education and community empowerment has been guided by a vision of unity and progress. “I would like to see our people work together,” she says. This sentiment has shaped her career and personal mission, as she continues to inspire future generations to work for positive change.

A Prayer for Melba Braud’s Legacy

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life and legacy of Melba Braud, whose dedication to education and service has touched so many lives. We ask that You continue to bless her work and the community she has impacted. May her example of perseverance and commitment inspire future generations to seek unity, empowerment, and progress. Guide us all in making a difference in our own communities. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
