A 2012 National Health Interview Survey, published in 2015, revealed that many parents are turning to complementary health care practices to address their children’s health concerns. The survey, which included over 10,000 children between the ages of 4 and 17, found that nearly 12% of children had used some form of complementary medicine during the past year. This growing trend reflects the increasing popularity of natural and holistic approaches to healthcare for children.
Common Complementary Practices for Children
Among the most common complementary treatments for children were natural supplements, including fish oil, probiotics, and melatonin. Chiropractic care and yoga were also frequently used. Parents sought these treatments for a variety of reasons, including addressing back and neck pain, musculoskeletal conditions, colds, anxiety, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and insomnia. These therapies are often seen as a more natural alternative to traditional medications, offering families options for managing their children’s health in a holistic way.
Biblical Wisdom on Health and Healing
The Bible speaks to the importance of caring for our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” This encourages us to take a balanced approach to health, seeking both traditional and complementary methods of healing when needed, while honoring God in all aspects of our lives.
A Prayer for Healing and Health
Lord, we thank You for the many ways You provide healing and support for our families. We pray for wisdom in caring for our children’s health, using the resources and methods that honor You. Guide parents in their decisions, and may every child be blessed with strength and well-being. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
