Lineman Becomes Unexpected Hero After Lightning Strikes Home

A Timely Warning, a Swift Response
When lightning struck the Oakley family home in Southwest Louisiana, Stephanie Stevens was the first to notice the smoke. Despite a locked gate, she returned to alert the homeowners. “Your house is on fire!” she warned. That simple act of concern gave Ron and Mary Oakley just enough time to escape with their dog. As Proverbs 27:10 reminds us, “Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.”

Matt Reed: A Servant Heart in Action
As fate would have it, SLEMCO lineman Matt Reed was driving by after a long day’s work when he saw flames leaping from the chimney. Instinct and training took over. He pulled the electric meter to prevent further hazards, grabbed a hose and ladder, and climbed onto the roof, directing water at the fire—buying time before firefighters could arrive. “I knew I had to help,” Matt said, echoing Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Firefighters Arrive to a Home Still Standing
Volunteer departments from Church Point, Mire, and Branch arrived to find Reed still battling the blaze. His courage slowed the fire’s spread, allowing firefighters to save the Oakleys’ home. “If no one had acted for even five more minutes, we would have lost everything,” Mary Oakley said. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Reed didn’t hesitate.

A Prayer for the Community
Lord, we thank You for the selflessness of those like Matt Reed and Stephanie Stevens. Bless the Oakley family with peace and restoration. Protect all first responders and neighbors who step in when others are in need. May our community remain strong, united, and full of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
