CAST NEWS: COVID-19 Sees Summer Spike Across the Nation

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting a late summer rise in COVID-19 cases across the United States. This seasonal surge, which has been seen every summer since the start of the pandemic, is once again bringing concern to families and communities.

High Positivity in Southern States

The spike is most evident in the region that includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, where about 15% of reported tests are coming back positive. Other states west of the Mississippi are also reporting test positivity rates above 10%, showing how widespread this summer wave has become.

Tracking Beyond Lab Tests

Because many Americans now use at-home COVID tests that aren’t always reported, the actual number of infections is likely much higher. To bridge this gap, health officials monitor wastewater, which can detect viruses spreading in a community even before symptoms appear or doctor visits occur. Current wastewater reports show very high virus activity in Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas, and Utah.

Why Summer Surges Happen

Experts explain that these summer spikes are linked to our behavior. More people gather indoors in air-conditioned but poorly ventilated spaces, creating an easy environment for the virus to spread. Increased travel and gatherings also play a role. Another factor is that immunity from last fall’s booster shots may now be fading, leaving people more vulnerable as we approach the new season.

Vaccine Access This Fall

The FDA has approved updated Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax vaccines for seniors, but access for younger adults and children without high-risk health conditions will be more limited. A CDC panel is scheduled to meet in September to provide more guidance on vaccine distribution and insurance coverage.

A Word of Faith and Hope

As communities face yet another summer wave of COVID-19, it is a reminder of both our human frailty and our dependence on God’s grace. Scripture tells us in Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” In times of uncertainty, we are called not to fear but to trust, to support one another, and to take steps that protect both ourselves and those most vulnerable.

Prayer for Our Nation and Communities

Heavenly Father,

We lift our nation and our communities to You during this renewed wave of sickness. Lord, grant wisdom to our leaders, compassion to our healthcare workers, and protection to our families. Strengthen the weary, comfort the anxious, and heal the sick. Help us to walk in faith, not fear, and to love our neighbors by caring for one another. May Your peace surround every household, and may Your light shine through us as a witness of hope in these times.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
