LAFAYETTE, La. — Lafayette Renaissance Charter High School is remembering the life of Alaya Christian, a bright and spirited student whose legacy continues to shine even after her passing. Taken tragically in the Mamou Mardi Gras mass shooting, Alaya is being honored in what would have been her senior year through heartfelt tributes that reflect her joy, school spirit, and love for others.
A Life That Shined with Spirit
Alaya was known for her involvement in both academics and athletics. She played softball and volleyball and served as an athletic trainer for the football team. Principal Marcus Simon described her as “a bright light in our hallways,” while Director of Athletics Lesley Hansen said her laughter and spirit represented the very heart of the school. Her presence continues to inspire students and staff alike. John 1:5 reminds us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Tributes of Love and Remembrance
The school has placed her softball jersey in the gym and her picture on the softball field, ensuring her spirit remains present on campus. The football team now wears her number 25 on their practice jerseys, and her younger brother honors her by wearing that number as well. These tributes remind the school community that love never fades. Romans 14:8 declares, “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”
A Scholarship That Carries On Her Legacy
An anonymous donor has created the Alaya Christian Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior who demonstrates purpose, passion, integrity, and grit—values Alaya lived daily. This scholarship ensures that her legacy will continue to bless others and point toward a future of hope.
