Thibodaux quarterback finds inspiration to play in memory of his late brother Colbi Blanchard

Playing Through Heartbreak
THIBODAUX, La. — For Thibodaux High School junior quarterback Damien Robertson, the season opener on September 5 carried a weight far beyond football. Just days earlier, Robertson’s older brother, Colbi “CoCo” Blanchard, 19, died from injuries suffered in a car accident in Iberia Parish. With his brother’s funeral scheduled for the next day, Damien faced a difficult decision: to sit out in grief or play in his brother’s honor. After prayer and encouragement from his family, coaches, and teammates, Robertson chose to play. The Tigers went on to win 21-14 over South Lafourche. “I know if Colbi was here, he would’ve wanted me to go play,” Robertson said. His words echo Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

A Team United in Love
Robertson’s decision became a source of strength for his teammates. Running back Vondarius Brown said, “That’s our brother. Everything he goes through; we go through with him.” The unity displayed reflects Romans 12:15: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Coaches, friends, and the Thibodaux community rallied around Robertson, showing him that in Christ, no one suffers alone.

Colbi’s Lasting Legacy
Blanchard, a 2023 graduate of Thibodaux, played football and baseball and served as a role model for his younger brother. Through organ donation, his life continues to bless others—a powerful reminder of John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Robertson now plays with the assurance that his brother’s legacy lives on, and with faith that Colbi is watching from heaven.

A Prayer for the Blanchard Family and Thibodaux Community
Heavenly Father, we lift up Damien, his family, teammates, and community during this time of grief. May Your peace that surpasses all understanding guard their hearts. Bless the memory of Colbi and let his life continue to inspire others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
