Filled, Not Just Inspired
“Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18, NLT)
In a world that encourages self-reliance and emotional highs, Scripture reminds believers that true strength comes not from fleeting feelings but from divine control. The Apostle Paul’s call to “be filled with the Spirit” is more than a suggestion—it’s a command for daily living. Just as wind fills the sails of a ship, guiding its direction, the Holy Spirit fills and directs the hearts of God’s people toward His purposes.
Continuous Filling, Constant Guidance
The original Greek for “be filled” implies ongoing action—“keep on being filled.” This means the Spirit’s filling is not a one-time emotional surge but a continual replenishing. Life drains us—through temptation, stress, and spiritual fatigue—but God invites us to return daily for renewal. Each morning, we can pray, “Lord, fill me again.” Whether or not emotion follows, His presence empowers.
Controlled by God, Not by Circumstances
When the Spirit fills us, He doesn’t merely visit—He governs. He transforms impulses, renews minds, and redirects desires. Just as drunkenness leads to reckless behavior, being filled with the Spirit leads to righteousness, wisdom, and peace (Galatians 5:22-23). It’s not about losing control—it’s about yielding control to the One who leads perfectly.
A Prayer for the Spirit’s Power
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Fill us afresh today. Guide our thoughts, words, and actions so that every step brings honor to You. Teach us to rely on Your Spirit’s power—not our own strength—so we may live victoriously and joyfully in Your will. Amen.
