Krewe of Rio gears up to roll in downtown Lafayette next Saturday

Preparing in Joy as Krewe of Rio Readies for Parade Season

NEW IBERIA, La. — In the early morning hours of Saturday, laughter, music, and purposeful activity filled the air in New Iberia as members of the Krewe of Rio gathered to prepare for the upcoming parade season. With hands busy loading floats with beads, light-up throws, and colorful treasures, krewe members worked together in anticipation of the Krewe of Rio Parada, set to roll through downtown Lafayette on Saturday, February 7. Their unity reflects the biblical truth that “there is a time to weep and a time to laugh… a time to mourn and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes 3:4).

Behind the Scenes: Fellowship in Action

For many, Mardi Gras parades are moments of spectacle along the streets, but behind the scenes, preparation is a deeply communal experience. Krewe members spent the day sorting, lifting, and organizing throws while sharing meals and conversation. Parade Governor John Breaux described the gathering as more than work. “It’s kind of a big event for Rio today,” he said. “We have food, and we get to mix with all the other members… it’s a family fun day.” This spirit of togetherness echoes Psalm 133:1: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”

Tradition, Creativity, and Generosity

As floats were stocked, Breaux offered a preview of what paradegoers can expect. From alligator-themed throws and classic beads to dazzling light-up items, the Krewe of Rio has prepared an abundance meant to delight all ages. Generosity lies at the heart of the tradition, as riders joyfully give to the crowds lining the route. Scripture teaches, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give… for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). That cheerful spirit is evident in every bag of throws prepared.

A Theme of Freedom and Celebration

This year’s parade carries a Brazilian theme, chosen by the krewe’s founders to reflect freedom, release, and the joy expressed through music, song, and dance. As a night parade, the Krewe of Rio Parada will illuminate the streets of Lafayette, marking the official kickoff of Mardi Gras parade season in the city. The theme serves as a reminder that joy and celebration are gifts from God, who desires His people to live in freedom of spirit. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free,” Galatians 5:1 proclaims.

Anticipation Builds Across Acadiana

With parade day drawing near, excitement continues to grow across Acadiana. Families prepare to gather along the route, children look forward to catching their first beads of the season, and krewe members count down the days until their months of preparation come to life. Even amid busy schedules and changing seasons, moments like these strengthen community bonds and offer glimpses of God’s goodness through shared celebration.

A Prayer for the Community and Parade Season

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the joy, fellowship, and creativity You have placed within our communities. We lift up the Krewe of Rio and all who participate in this parade season. Grant safety to riders, volunteers, and spectators, and let these celebrations bring unity and joy to families across Acadiana. May every gathering be filled with kindness, generosity, and gratitude, honoring You in all we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen
