Joy Rising Despite the Chill as Mardi Gras Season Unfolds
LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. — Even as frigid temperatures linger across south Louisiana, the spirit of Mardi Gras is alive and flourishing in Lafayette. Along Bertrand Drive, the unmistakable purple, green, and gold building of Beads for Less has become a gathering place for krewe members and families preparing for the joyful days ahead. The scene is a reminder that joy is not dependent on circumstances. As Scripture declares, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10), and that joy continues to warm hearts across Acadiana.
A Local Business Serving Community and Tradition
Beads for Less owner Greg Grace says the store has become a cornerstone for Mardi Gras preparations throughout the region. Shoppers from near and far fill the aisles in search of unique throws and festive treasures. “I think we’re the biggest Mardi Gras supplier in the area,” Grace shared. His words reflect the biblical call to stewardship and service within the community. Proverbs 11:25 reminds us, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Fellowship on Display Among Krewe Members
Among the weekend shoppers were approximately 40 members of the Krewe De Bon Amis, who traveled from Lake Charles to shop together. Krewe President Meagon Gonzalez described the outing as more than a shopping trip—it was a time of fellowship. “It was fun for the krewe—just a big social together,” she said. Such moments echo Hebrews 10:24–25, which encourages believers to gather together and spur one another on in love and good works.
Supporting Local, Strengthening the Region
Krewe member Tanner Guidry emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, noting that Lake Charles lacks a comparable store. By shopping in Lafayette, krewe members not only find quality throws at good prices but also invest in the regional economy. This spirit aligns with Jeremiah 29:7, which calls communities to seek the welfare of the places they inhabit, knowing that shared prosperity benefits all.
Weather Challenges Met with Perseverance
While cold temperatures slowed business briefly, Grace said the store rebounded strongly as shoppers returned in force. The busiest day of the season came Saturday, making up for lost time. Online orders, however, have faced shipping delays due to weather-related disruptions affecting FedEx and UPS. Still, Grace remains optimistic. “This weekend they came back strong,” he said, reflecting the perseverance praised in James 1:12: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial.”
Anticipation Builds as Parades Approach
With temperatures expected to rise and parade season set to begin, excitement is building across Lafayette Parish. The first parade, Krewe of Rio Parada, is scheduled to roll through Lafayette on Saturday, February 7. As beads are strung and throws prepared, the community looks forward to days filled with laughter, generosity, and celebration—expressions of God’s abundant grace.
A Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the joy and fellowship that unite our communities during this Mardi Gras season. Bless local businesses like Beads for Less and the families and krewe members who support them. Grant safety as parades roll, warmth as winter fades, and unity among all who gather to celebrate. May our traditions reflect generosity, kindness, and gratitude to You in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
