LAFAYETTE, La. — Stewardship and Success in Louisiana’s Black Bear Season
CAST NEWS Christian News Networks reports that Louisiana’s second modern black bear hunting season, held Dec. 6–21, has concluded with results that highlight careful stewardship, conservation success, and respect for God’s creation. According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), 16 black bears were harvested statewide in 2025, a season made possible by decades of cooperative conservation efforts. Scripture reminds believers that “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1), a truth reflected in the thoughtful management of Louisiana’s wildlife resources.
Measured Harvest Reflects Responsible Management
LDWF officials reported that 10 male and six female bears were taken during the season, with strict regulations in place to protect cubs and females with cubs. Twenty-six lottery tags were issued to properly licensed Louisiana residents, ensuring population sustainability. LDWF Secretary Tyler Bosworth described the season as “a tribute to the conservation effort” of landowners, hunters, and partners who helped restore the Louisiana black bear. Proverbs 12:10 teaches, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals,” underscoring the faith-based principle of responsible stewardship.
Local Hunters Experience Once-in-a-Lifetime Moments
In Black Bear Area 1, two Acadiana hunters were among those blessed with rare opportunities. New Iberia’s Lannie Buteau harvested the first bear of the season, a 528-pound bruin, on opening day in St. Mary Parish. Ronnie Dore, also of New Iberia, later took a 282-pound bear with a bow and arrow on his property near Louisa. Their perseverance echoes Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest.”
Conservation Across Multiple Regions
The majority of bears—eight including the largest at 565 pounds—were taken in Black Bear Area 4 in northeast Louisiana, where 15 permits were issued. Area 2 accounted for three bears. The 16 harvested bears averaged 341 pounds, reflecting a healthy population supported by sound science. These outcomes affirm the wisdom found in Proverbs 21:5: “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.”
From Threatened Species to Restoration Success
The Louisiana black bear’s journey stands as one of the nation’s most successful conservation stories. Listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1992, the bear was removed from the list in 2016 after habitat restoration, population monitoring, and protective measures proved effective. This redemption story mirrors God’s promise of renewal: “See, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:19).
Faith, Gratitude, and Continued Responsibility
Lottery and license revenues from the hunt are reinvested into the Louisiana Black Bear Program, supporting research, radio-collaring, den checks, and non-invasive monitoring. These efforts ensure the species’ long-term health while allowing hunters to participate ethically. As Genesis 2:15 declares, humanity is called “to work it and take care of it,” a mandate reflected in Louisiana’s balanced approach to wildlife management.
Prayer for the Community and Conservation Efforts
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of creation and for the wisdom You grant to steward it well. Bless the hunters, conservationists, and families impacted by this season. Protect Louisiana’s wildlife, guide our leaders in responsible decision-making, and teach us to honor You in all we do. May gratitude and humility mark our use of Your provision. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
