A Life of Service Honored in Acadiana
LAFAYETTE, La. — CAST NEWS Christian News Networks reports that Dr. Carolyn French has been named Acadiana’s Remarkable Woman of the Year, a recognition that celebrates decades of faithful service to education, community outreach, and the well-being of local families. Known affectionately across Lafayette as the “Learning Fairy,” Dr. French’s journey reflects Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Her calling has never been about titles, but about impact — planting seeds of hope in classrooms and communities throughout South Louisiana.
From Cotton Fields to Classrooms
Raised on a farm in north Louisiana, Dr. French learned early the value of perseverance and education. She has often shared that observing her teachers inspired her to pursue learning as a pathway to opportunity. “If I didn’t want to pick cotton all my life, I should get an education,” she recalled.
That conviction carried her from high school teacher to university professor and later to financial advisor. Yet her heart remained rooted in schools. Scripture affirms in Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Dr. French committed her gifts to strengthening the academic foundation of Acadiana’s youth.
The Birth of the ‘Learning Fairy’
Out of personal grief came one of her most beloved ministries. After the passing of her husband, Dr. French was scheduled to read to children but felt overwhelmed by sorrow. Instead of withdrawing, she chose joy. Renting a princess dress with a tall pointed hat, she transformed herself into the “Learning Fairy,” a whimsical messenger of literacy and encouragement.
When former Lafayette Parish School Board member Mike Hefner spotted her in costume and coined the nickname, the title stuck. Children eagerly awaited her visits, where she distributed “learning dust” and stories that stirred imagination. On one occasion, as students made the sign of the cross over the glittering dust, she was deeply moved. “They think of this as being holy,” she reflected — a tender reminder of Matthew 19:14, where Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me.”
Though the costume may now rest in a closet, friends say the spirit of the Learning Fairy remains alive in her tireless advocacy.
Building Foundations That Last
Dr. French’s legacy stretches far beyond storytelling. She founded Friends of Music to provide scholarships to talented young musicians. She co-founded the Lafayette Public Education Foundation to fund innovative classroom initiatives. Through the Shining Light Foundation and Spark! Acadiana, she has helped provide financial assistance for academic enrichment and strengthen physical education programs.
Her compassion also extends to basic needs. As co-founder of Food Net Food Bank, she has worked to curb hunger across multiple parishes — living out Matthew 25:35: “For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat.”
Former educator Cynthia Dauphin describes Dr. French as “kind, thoughtful, and dedicated,” noting her enduring heart for teachers and students alike.
A Light That Continues to Shine
In honoring Dr. French as Remarkable Woman of the Year, Acadiana celebrates more than accomplishments; it celebrates a life poured out for others. Matthew 5:16 calls believers to “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Through literacy programs, scholarships, and hunger relief, her light has illuminated countless paths.
Her story stands as a reminder that education, compassion, and faith can transform communities for generations.
