St. Thomas More’s Danny Broussard becomes 5th all-time winningest coach

Historic Milestone: Danny Broussard Climbs to No. 5 All-Time in High School Basketball Wins

LAFAYETTE, La. — Victory may never grow old, but for Danny Broussard, each win carries deeper meaning than the last. On Feb. 17, the St. Thomas More Catholic High School boys basketball team secured a commanding 68-44 victory over Rayne High School, marking Broussard’s 1,186th career win. The milestone moved him past Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, placing Broussard fifth on the all-time national wins list.

For the veteran coach, recently honored in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the achievement is not about personal glory but collective faithfulness. “I give credit to our kids,” Broussard said. “They’ve remained focused, and we’re playing so good right now. It’s always fun winning.”

Perseverance Through Adversity

This season’s success did not come easily. The Cougars dropped eight games early while replacing five starters from last year’s squad, which finished runner-up in the LHSAA Select Division I championship. Adding to the challenge, key post player Michael LaCour II suffered a broken leg in late January.

Yet adversity often reveals character. James 1:12 reminds believers, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life.” Broussard admitted he once questioned whether the team could reach its potential. But during a pivotal road game against Dunham on Jan. 28, the Cougars discovered their rhythm.

“They have just really played some inspired basketball,” Broussard reflected. “The effort has picked up. We’re playing with a lot of intensity.”

Rising Leaders on the Court

At the heart of the Cougars’ surge is junior forward Ryan Robertson. Averaging around 20 points per game, the 6-foot-5 standout has become a force on both offense and defense. Alongside Robertson, guards Matthew Cook, LG Carbo, Xarian Babineaux, and Kyle Guillot have provided steady leadership and scoring.

Their teamwork reflects Ecclesiastes 4:9: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” Basketball, like faith, thrives in unity. Each rebound, assist, and defensive stop is a reminder that shared effort multiplies impact.

The Cougars now ride a double-digit win streak as they close the regular season and prepare for postseason play. Momentum, built through perseverance, has transformed doubt into confidence.

A Coach Grounded in Gratitude

Despite national recognition, Broussard remains quick to deflect praise. “I’m so blessed to have such great assistance,” he said, noting nearly ten assistant coaches who have supported him throughout his career. “Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

He also honors former players whose dedication shaped his legacy. “With all these accolades I’m getting, it’s about them,” Broussard said. “They’re the guys that sacrificed. They’re the guys that believed.”

Proverbs 27:17 teaches, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Broussard’s milestone stands as a testament not only to his leadership but to generations of young men who trusted his guidance.

Winning with Eternal Perspective

While 1,186 wins etch his name into history, Broussard’s words reveal a heart anchored in something greater than statistics. Championships fade, records are eventually surpassed, but character endures. For this coach and his Cougars, the pursuit of excellence mirrors the apostle Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 9:24: “Run in such a way as to get the prize.”

As postseason play approaches, the Cougars carry more than momentum — they carry belief, resilience, and gratitude.

A Prayer for the Team and Community

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of leadership, perseverance, and teamwork displayed by Coach Broussard and the St. Thomas More Cougars. Bless these athletes as they compete with integrity and unity. Heal those who are injured and strengthen every player’s spirit. May victories bring humility and challenges build character. Let this milestone remind our community that dedication and faithfulness bear fruit in due season. Guide them in every step, on and off the court. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
