A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice
BATON ROUGE, La. — The Louisiana State Police marked a historic milestone July 28, celebrating 90 years of service to the people of Louisiana during a special gathering at LSP Headquarters. Current and retired Troopers, family members, friends, and law enforcement partners from local, state, and federal agencies gathered to remember the agency’s history and recognize those who have dedicated their lives to protecting others.
For Christians, such a milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on the biblical importance of faithful service. Scripture reminds believers in Galatians 6:9 not to grow weary in doing good, because perseverance in service can produce lasting fruit. The story of the Louisiana State Police reflects generations of men and women who have embraced that responsibility.
Honoring a Lifetime of Service
One of the most meaningful moments of the anniversary celebration was the recognition of Retired Sergeant Maurice “Bud” Roy of Parks, who at age 94 was honored as the oldest living retired Louisiana State Trooper.
Roy, a graduate of Cadet Class 39, served Louisiana for 22 years before retiring as a Sergeant from Troop I in 1984. His journey of public service began with the United States Navy and continued through the National Guard and the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office before he joined the Louisiana State Police.
After retiring from the State Police, Roy continued serving his community as a Patrol Commander with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office. His decades of service demonstrate that a calling to serve others does not necessarily end when a uniform is put away.
Family Standing Behind the Badge
Roy was surrounded by family and fellow law enforcement colleagues during the celebration, including his son-in-law, Craig Latiolais, and granddaughter-in-law, Lauren Latiolais.
He and his late wife, Marian “Mary Ann” H. Roy, raised six daughters: Pamela DeBlanc, Charlotte Roy, Phyllis Roy, Kathryn Thibodeaux, Donna Latiolais, and Roxanne Roy. Their family has grown to include 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The presence of Roy’s family serves as a reminder that public service affects more than the person wearing the badge. Families often make sacrifices alongside law enforcement officers, providing encouragement, strength, and support through demanding years of service.
Remembering Those Who Served
St. Martin Parish Sheriff Beckett Breaux also recognized Roy’s decades of dedication and the lasting influence of his lifelong commitment to Louisiana communities.
The anniversary celebration honored not only retired and current Troopers, but also the families, friends, and agency partners who have helped strengthen the Louisiana State Police throughout its 90-year history. The occasion also remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Romans 13:4 speaks of civil authorities as servants responsible for maintaining order and carrying out their duties. While every institution is made up of imperfect people, the biblical principle reminds communities of the importance of lawful authority and the responsibility to protect others.
Looking Toward the Future
The 90th anniversary was more than a celebration of the past. It was a reminder to carry forward a legacy built upon courage, commitment, and service.
The Louisiana State Police motto—“Courtesy. Loyalty. Service.”—captures principles that can resonate beyond law enforcement. Philippians 2:4 encourages people to look not only to their own interests, but also to the interests of others.
As Louisiana State Police Troopers continue serving communities across the state, their 90-year history stands as a testimony to generations of service. Psalm 90:12 offers a fitting prayer for such a milestone: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
A Prayer for Louisiana
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the men and women who have devoted their lives to serving and protecting the people of Louisiana. We thank You for the legacy of the Louisiana State Police, for retired Troopers such as Sergeant Maurice “Bud” Roy, and for the families who have faithfully stood beside those who serve. Lord, comfort the families of officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Strengthen current Troopers, give them wisdom and courage, and protect them as they carry out their responsibilities. Bless their families and the communities they serve. May Louisiana continue to value justice, compassion, courage, and service. Guide those entrusted with public safety and help future generations understand the importance of serving others with humility and integrity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
