Iberia Parish Animal Shelter Expansion Brings New Hope for Animals and Families

A Major Investment in Animal Care

IBERIA PARISH, La. — Construction is underway on a $1.7 million expansion of the Iberia Parish Animal Shelter, a project parish leaders say will increase capacity, improve animal care and create a better environment for employees and families seeking to adopt.

The expansion will add a new building connected to the existing shelter, providing additional space for animals and allowing staff to improve daily operations. Parish leaders expect the expanded facility to open in February 2027, provided construction remains on schedule.

From a Christian perspective, caring for animals reflects a broader biblical principle of responsible stewardship. Proverbs 12:10 teaches, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” While Scripture places human beings in a unique position within creation, it also demonstrates that compassionate care for animals matters to God.

More Space Means Better Care

The project is expected to add approximately 33 new kennels, giving shelter employees more room to separate animals and provide appropriate care. One of the most significant additions will be a dedicated quarantine area designed to help prevent the spread of disease among animals housed at the facility.

Iberia Parish President Larry Richard said the new configuration will represent a significant improvement when construction is completed. The quarantine space will allow sick animals to be separated from healthy animals, creating a safer environment throughout the shelter.

This kind of care reflects the biblical call to protect and responsibly manage what has been entrusted to us. Genesis 2:15 describes humanity’s responsibility to “work it and take care of it,” establishing an important principle of stewardship that extends to God’s creation.

Expanded Hours Open the Door to Families

Another major improvement has already taken place through expanded operating hours. The shelter previously closed during the afternoon, but residents now have more opportunities to access its services. The facility operates from approximately 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day, including Saturdays.

The expanded schedule is intended to make it easier for residents to bring animals to the shelter and visit animals available for adoption. Greater accessibility may also help connect more animals with families who are ready to provide permanent homes.

For Christians, welcoming and caring for others is a recurring biblical theme. Jesus taught His followers to serve others with compassion (Matthew 25:40). While an animal shelter serves a different purpose than a ministry, the spirit of compassionate service can still influence how a community treats vulnerable creatures and the people who care for them.

State and Parish Support Make the Project Possible

The expansion carries a $1.7 million price tag. The parish received $1 million in state Capital Outlay funding, while Iberia Parish is covering the remaining cost.

The investment represents a significant commitment to addressing the growing demand for animal services throughout the parish. It also demonstrates how public resources can be directed toward practical community needs.

The Bible encourages people to work together for the good of their communities. Galatians 6:10 reminds believers to “do good to all people,” providing a principle that can inspire cooperation and service.

Adoptions Bring Hope

The shelter has already seen encouraging signs. Richard reported that more than 30 animals were adopted during the previous month, demonstrating the potential for improved facilities and greater community involvement to make a difference.

A better organized shelter may give families an improved adoption experience while providing employees with a more functional workplace. Richard praised the Animal Control staff and expressed hope that the expansion will give them the environment and resources necessary to serve effectively.

At its heart, adoption represents a second chance. Animals that may have been abandoned or displaced can find new homes, while families gain an opportunity to welcome a new companion.

A Prayer for Iberia Parish

Heavenly Father, we pray for the animals, families, employees and community members impacted by the Iberia Parish Animal Shelter expansion. Give wisdom and strength to those overseeing the construction and caring for the animals each day. Protect the workers and animals throughout the project, and provide loving homes for those awaiting adoption. May this expanded facility become a place of compassion, responsible stewardship and hope. Help our community recognize the value of caring for vulnerable creatures and encourage more families to consider adoption. Bless Iberia Parish with unity, generosity and a spirit of service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
