Building a Stronger Lafayette: Transit System Receives Major Federal Investment

A Major Investment in Lafayette’s Future

LAFAYETTE, La. — Lafayette’s public transportation system is entering a new season of investment after Lafayette Consolidated Government secured nearly $3 million in competitive federal funding to modernize the Lafayette Transit System (LTS). The $2.985 million award will help replace aging buses, improve maintenance facilities and strengthen the reliability, safety and comfort of public transportation throughout Lafayette Parish.

The funding comes through Federal Transit Administration programs that redistributed unused federal transit dollars. Lafayette was among only a small number of Louisiana transit agencies selected through the competitive process.

Serving the Community Through Reliable Transportation

Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet said dependable transportation strengthens the workforce and helps residents reach jobs, schools, health care, businesses and other essential services.

From a Christian perspective, serving the needs of neighbors is a responsibility Scripture takes seriously. Galatians 5:13 calls believers to “serve one another in love.” A dependable transportation system can be one practical way a community helps people remain connected and able to pursue opportunities.

Federal Grants Open the Door to Improvements

LTS received $1.785 million through the Federal Fiscal Year 2025 Rural Section 5339 Bus and Bus Facilities Program. Another $1.2 million came through the FTA Section 5307 Small Urban Areas Program.

The grants, combined with required local matching funds, will support projects addressing some of the challenges associated with an aging transit system. Planned improvements include replacing buses that have exceeded their useful service life, upgrading the compressed natural gas fueling facility, installing heavy-duty vehicle maintenance lifts and modernizing the diesel fuel dispensing system.

These improvements are expected to help LTS perform preventive maintenance more effectively while reducing downtime and long-term operating costs.

New Buses Bring Modern Features

The investment also builds on Lafayette’s ongoing fleet replacement program. During Phase II, five new 35-foot Gillig low-floor buses are being placed into service. Three will operate on LTS routes, while two will be leased to UL Lafayette.

The buses include real-time digital route displays, complimentary Wi-Fi, nine-camera surveillance systems and rear backup cameras. They also feature driver-assistance technology, priority ADA seating and audio and visual stop-request notifications.

Another five buses are expected to arrive in early 2027. When all phases are complete, LTS will have added 14 new buses through approximately $9.6 million in fleet modernization investments.

Building for Generations to Come

Transit and Parking Manager Michael Mitchell described the current period as one of the most significant investment periods in LTS history. Over the past three years, LCG has invested approximately $12 million in federal and local funding toward strengthening Lafayette’s transportation system.

Proverbs 21:5 teaches that “the thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness.” Responsible planning and stewardship today can help establish infrastructure that serves residents for years to come.

As Lafayette continues growing, reliable transportation will remain important to the community’s future. The investments are intended not only to improve today’s passenger experience but also to prepare LTS to serve future generations.

A Call to Stewardship and Service

Public infrastructure ultimately exists to serve people. The modernization of Lafayette’s transit system offers an opportunity for leaders and residents alike to consider how resources can be used wisely for the common good.

Philippians 2:4 encourages believers to look not only to their own interests, “but every man also on the things of others.” Safe, accessible and dependable transportation can help strengthen connections throughout Lafayette Parish.

Prayer for Lafayette

Heavenly Father, we pray for Lafayette Parish and everyone who depends upon public transportation each day. Protect passengers, drivers, maintenance workers and all those who operate and maintain the transit system.

Give community leaders wisdom as they steward public resources, and help these investments provide lasting benefits to families, workers, students, seniors and those who depend on reliable transportation.

May these improvements strengthen the community, open doors to opportunity and help residents reach the places and people they need. Give everyone involved a heart of service and a commitment to safety, integrity and excellence.

As Jeremiah 29:7 reminds us, may the people of Lafayette “seek the peace” and prosperity of their community. May these efforts contribute to a stronger and more connected Acadiana.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
