Preserving a Heritage Through Education

In the heart of Acadiana, where crawfish farming is deeply woven into the culture and economy of South Louisiana, Abbeville High School is providing students with a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about one of the region’s most important industries. Through a crawfish pond located behind the school campus, agriculture students are gaining practical experience in raising, managing, and harvesting crawfish while developing valuable skills that can benefit them for years to come.

The program reflects the biblical principle found in Proverbs 22:29, which says, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will stand before kings; they will not stand before obscure people.” By teaching students real-world agricultural skills, educators are helping prepare the next generation of farmers, business leaders, and stewards of God’s creation.

Community Partnership Protects Student Learning Project

Recently, the school publicly thanked Jeff Meaux of AK Drone Service for assisting with the care of the pond after an armyworm infestation threatened the rice crop that supports the crawfish habitat. Meaux applied a safe and well-tolerated insecticide to eliminate the pests before they could cause significant damage.

The effort serves as a reminder of the strength found in community partnerships. When neighbors work together to solve problems, they reflect the spirit of Galatians 6:2, which encourages believers to “carry each other’s burdens.” Local businesses and community members continue to play a vital role in helping educational programs like this one succeed.
