A SEASON OF GIVING BEGINS EARLY
LAFAYETTE, La. — Veterans Day may still be months away, but across Acadiana, the spirit of gratitude is already taking root. Acadiana Area for Veterans is preparing care packages for local veterans, retired firefighters and police officers living in nursing homes throughout the region, offering tangible reminders that their service has not been forgotten.
The effort reflects a biblical principle found in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary of doing good.” For volunteers and donors, the packages are more than donations. They are an opportunity to tell those who served their communities and country that they remain valued.
REMEMBERING THOSE WHO SERVED
At Avanti Senior Living, Vietnam veteran Thomas “Tom” Peters understands the importance of being remembered. Having lived at the facility for two years, Peters has witnessed the encouragement that comes when people take time to visit and recognize veterans.
For residents who may have limited mobility or cannot easily leave their nursing homes, visitors and community outreach can bring tremendous encouragement. Peters said simply knowing that people are thinking about them means a great deal.
Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that “A friend loves at all times.” Sometimes that love is expressed through a conversation, a visit or a simple care package.
A COMMUNITY OF VETERANS FINDS CONNECTION
Avanti Senior Living has a strong community of veterans, creating opportunities for residents to connect with people who understand some of the experiences that shaped their lives.
Hope LeCompte, a life design curator at Avanti, has seen firsthand how recognition affects the residents. Moments when visitors thank veterans can transform the atmosphere throughout the facility, bringing emotion, smiles and a renewed sense of belonging.
For older adults adjusting to life in a senior living community, those connections can be especially meaningful. Many have experienced major transitions, including leaving homes, possessions and familiar routines behind.
MORE THAN A BOX OF SUPPLIES
The care packages being prepared by Acadiana Area for Veterans will contain practical items such as lap blankets, socks, hats, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, lotion and ChapStick.
Yet the greatest gift may not be what is inside the package. It is the message behind it: You are remembered. You are appreciated. You matter.
Philippians 2:4 encourages believers to look “not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” A community willing to meet practical needs while offering encouragement demonstrates that principle in action.
A REGIONAL EFFORT TO SHOW GRATITUDE
Acadiana Area for Veterans plans to deliver care packages to approximately 28 nursing homes across the area. Physical donations will begin being accepted Sept. 4 at several locations, including Ride Elementary, Gordy Automotive on Fillmore Road next to Judice Elementary, the Acadiana Area for Veterans location and NuNu’s in Scott.
The effort also provides families, churches, schools, businesses and individuals with a meaningful way to participate. Every donated item can become part of a larger expression of gratitude.
HONORING SERVICE THROUGH ACTION
Scripture calls believers to honor others and care for those around them. Romans 12:10 says, “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”
For Acadiana’s veterans, retired first responders and their families, these care packages represent that kind of honor. Long after uniforms have been put away and active service has ended, the need for dignity, friendship and encouragement remains.
As Veterans Day approaches, Acadiana is demonstrating that honoring those who served does not have to wait for one special day. Gratitude can begin today—and it can arrive one care package, one visit and one act of kindness at a time.
A PRAYER FOR OUR VETERANS AND COMMUNITY
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the men and women who have served our nation and communities. Bless every veteran, retired firefighter and police officer receiving these care packages. Strengthen those who feel alone and comfort families facing difficult transitions. Bless the volunteers, donors, nursing home workers and everyone giving their time and resources. May each package communicate dignity, gratitude and love. Help us remember that serving others is a calling and that even the smallest act of kindness can bring light to someone’s day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
