Lafayette Youth Minister Recognized for Bringing Christ’s Light to the Next Generation

A Calling to Serve Local Youth Earns National Recognition

LAFAYETTE, La. — A Lafayette woman’s dedication to nurturing the faith of young people has earned her national recognition as one of eight finalists for the 2026-27 Lumen Christi Award, the highest honor presented by the Catholic Extension Society.

Bridgette Mouton, youth director at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Lafayette, was selected from nominees across the country for her commitment to rebuilding and strengthening youth ministry in her parish. The award recognizes individuals who radiate and reveal the light of Christ through their service to others.

For Mouton, the honor came as a complete surprise. What began as a desire to provide young people with opportunities to grow in their faith has grown into a ministry that is impacting lives throughout her church community.

Jesus taught in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Those who know Mouton say her work reflects that calling through her compassion, leadership, and commitment to serving others.

Rebuilding a Ministry After Difficult Times

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Immaculate Heart of Mary found itself without an active youth ministry program. Recognizing the need for young people to reconnect with their faith and one another, Mouton stepped forward to help rebuild the ministry from the ground up.

With limited resources, she and her husband took on additional work, organized fundraisers, and made personal sacrifices to provide retreats, activities, and faith-building opportunities for local youth.

Her motivation was simple: she wanted every child to know they were loved and supported.

Mouton has often spoken about the importance of showing young people that caring adults exist beyond their immediate families—people who can encourage them, guide them, and walk beside them through life’s challenges.

This reflects the biblical principle found in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Creating a Village of Faith and Support

As today’s teenagers face increasing pressures from social media, relationships, and questions about identity and faith, Mouton believes the church has an important role to play in providing guidance and stability.

She describes youth ministry as a place where young people can find trusted mentors and a supportive community. Her vision is rooted in the belief that raising faithful and healthy young people requires a strong village of caring individuals working together.

The ministry has become more than a weekly gathering. It has evolved into a place where relationships are built, faith is strengthened, and young people are reminded that they are valued by both God and their community.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 reminds believers, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.” Mouton’s ministry demonstrates the power of a community united in purpose and faith.

Looking Toward the Future

As a Lumen Christi Award finalist, Mouton’s ministry will receive $15,000 in funding to continue serving young people. The eventual recipient will receive an additional $50,000 for their ministry, with another $50,000 awarded to the nominating diocese.

Mouton hopes those resources would allow for expanded retreats, weekly programs, and opportunities for youth to experience the broader Catholic Church beyond their own communities.

Regardless of the final outcome, many in Lafayette already view her work as a victory. Through faith, sacrifice, and a heart for service, she has helped create a place where young people can encounter the love of Christ and build a foundation for their future.
