A Day of Giving Brings Hope to Families Facing Cancer
The aroma of Cajun cooking, the sound of live music, and the spirit of generosity filled the grounds of Cajun Harley-Davidson in Scott as families gathered for the first-ever “Anything Over Rice Cook-Off,” hosted by Krewe du Fu Acadian. While the event featured delicious food and friendly competition, its greater purpose was to raise support for Miles Perret Cancer Services, a nonprofit that has provided hope and assistance to thousands of Acadiana families battling cancer.
More than 40 cooking teams and vendors participated in the family-friendly fundraiser, which included food tastings, a silent auction, and community fellowship. The event demonstrated how a community united by compassion can become the hands and feet of Christ to those facing difficult circumstances.
A Daughter’s Mission Inspired by Love
For Krewe du Fu Acadian founder and president Gretchen Vernon, the fundraiser carried deep personal meaning. Three years ago, she lost her mother, Deborah Graves, after a courageous battle with breast, colon, and lung cancer.
Throughout that journey, Miles Perret Cancer Services stood beside the family, offering counseling, practical assistance, wigs, and emotional support. Vernon said those acts of kindness left a lasting impression and inspired her desire to help others.
Her mission reflects the words of Galatians 6:2, which says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Through the cook-off, Vernon honored her mother’s legacy of generosity while encouraging others to support neighbors facing cancer.
A Family Legacy of Compassion
Randy Graves, Deborah’s husband, attended the event to honor his late wife and express gratitude for the organization that supported their family. He described Deborah as someone who never hesitated to help others in need.
Her spirit of service continues through her daughter’s efforts and through the many volunteers who dedicated their time to the fundraiser. Graves shared that he has even included a future donation to Miles Perret Cancer Services in his will, ensuring that others will continue receiving help in the years ahead.
His commitment reflects Proverbs 19:17: “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done.”
Cancer’s Impact Unites the Community
Among those showing support was Grammy Award-winning zydeco musician Chubby Carrier, whose own father passed away from lung cancer. Though he was not performing, Carrier came to stand alongside families affected by the disease.
Many cooks and vendors also shared personal stories of loved ones battling cancer. Some booths displayed pink-themed products in honor of breast cancer survivors and fighters. Their presence served as a reminder that cancer touches nearly every family, but faith and community can help carry people through the darkest seasons.
Romans 12:15 encourages believers to “rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Saturday’s event beautifully reflected that biblical call.
A Beacon of Hope for Acadiana
Miles Perret Cancer Services has supported more than 28,000 families across Acadiana since opening in 2002. The organization provides free services including transportation assistance, treatment care kits, emotional support, wigs, and wellness programs.
As attendees sampled dishes and cast their votes, they were doing more than enjoying a cook-off—they were helping ensure that local families continue receiving life-changing support during some of their most challenging moments.
The event’s success highlighted the power of a caring community and the enduring truth found in Hebrews 10:24: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
