Local Artist’s Dream Grows Into a Community Hub for Creativity

LAFAYETTE, La. — A growing vision to support artists, encourage creativity, and build community has taken another exciting step forward as Cocodrie Collective officially opened its second Lafayette location at 500 Settlers Trace Blvd., Suite 5. The artist-owned creative shop, already well known in Downtown Lafayette, is expanding its reach while continuing its mission of connecting local artists and creative thinkers with the community.

Founded by Acadiana native and artist Colette Bernard, Cocodrie Collective has become more than a retail store. It has evolved into a gathering place where creativity is celebrated and where independent artists can showcase their talents. The expansion reflects both the success of the business and the growing desire among local residents to support handmade, locally created works.

A Journey Rooted in Faith, Talent, and Homegrown Inspiration

Bernard’s journey began in Acadiana before leading her to New York, where she attended Pratt Institute and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2021. After spending several years away, she returned home with a vision to build something meaningful in the community that shaped her.

Through her work as Artist Colette, Bernard developed a loyal following online through her artwork, designs, and popular Career Claw hair clips. Yet her dream extended beyond personal success. In 2023, she opened Cocodrie Collective in Downtown Lafayette, creating a space where fellow artists and makers could share their work with the public.

Her commitment reflects the biblical principle found in Proverbs 22:29: “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings.” The verse reminds believers that God-given talents are meant to be cultivated and shared for the benefit of others.

A Place Where Artists and Community Come Together

The new location offers significantly more room for the shop’s expanding collection of artwork, gifts, jewelry, home décor, books, clothing, ceramics, and other unique items created by independent artists. More importantly, it introduces a dedicated creative event space designed for workshops, birthday parties, community gatherings, and hands-on artistic experiences.

According to Cocodrie Collective, the goal has always been to create an environment where artists, creative minds, and curious visitors can connect and collaborate. As interest in the business grew, so did the need for a larger space where those relationships could flourish.
