A Century of Life Rooted in Faith
A century of life, a lifetime of creativity, and an unwavering belief in God’s purpose marked a special milestone for Lafayette resident Hazel Nowlin, who celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers.
Nowlin celebrated the remarkable occasion on Tuesday, October 13, at Rosewood Assisted Living, where a joyful gathering honored her life and legacy. One of the celebration’s most memorable moments came when she danced with her son, demonstrating that joy and gratitude can continue to flourish through every season of life.
For Nowlin, reaching the century mark is more than a personal achievement. She believes her longevity reflects a greater purpose established by God.
“I tribute it to God; he had a reason,” Nowlin said, expressing her conviction that the Lord had a purpose for allowing her to live 100 years.
Her testimony echoes Psalm 90:12, which encourages believers to number their days so they may gain a heart of wisdom. Her milestone offers the community an opportunity to reflect on the value of life, the blessings of family, and the importance of recognizing God’s goodness throughout the years.
Creativity and Movement Keep the Spirit Alive
Alongside her faith, Nowlin credits staying active and nurturing her artistic interests as meaningful parts of her life. Walking and dancing have helped her remain physically engaged, while art has provided a creative outlet that has occupied her mind and imagination for decades.
What began accidentally eventually became a passion lasting approximately 50 years. Nowlin recalled becoming increasingly interested in her craft and choosing to develop her skills through classes and workshops.
“I just accidentally got started. That’s how it started,” she explained.
Over time, her interest grew into a significant part of her life. “I somehow got interested in the work and I took classes and workshops, and it was a big part of my life for a while,” she said.
Her story illustrates the importance of remaining curious, discovering new interests, and embracing opportunities to learn at every stage of life. Exodus 35:35 speaks of God-given skill and craftsmanship, reminding Christians that creativity can be a meaningful expression of the abilities and gifts entrusted to humanity.
A Living Reminder of God’s Faithfulness
Nowlin’s birthday also highlights the importance of honoring older adults, whose experiences and memories can enrich families and communities. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to respect older generations and learn from their wisdom.
Proverbs 16:31 declares that gray hair is a crown of glory when found in a life of righteousness. In Psalm 92:14, Scripture describes the righteous as continuing to bear fruit in old age, remaining full of vitality.
For Christians, these passages offer encouragement to see aging not simply as the passage of time, but as an opportunity to celebrate perseverance, relationships, wisdom, and enduring faith.
Nowlin’s family and the Rosewood Assisted Living staff plan to continue celebrating her 100th birthday throughout October, extending the recognition of a milestone that has brought loved ones together in gratitude and joy.
A Community Celebrates a Remarkable Milestone
As Lafayette celebrates Nowlin’s extraordinary birthday, her story serves as a reminder that every life carries dignity and worth. Her faith-filled perspective, love of art, and willingness to keep moving offer an encouraging example to younger generations.
While every person’s journey is different, Nowlin’s testimony invites the community to cherish each day, cultivate meaningful passions, and remain thankful for the people who walk alongside us.
