LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA — LOCAL TALENT, BIG DREAMS
A growing sense of pride is building across Acadiana as Lafayette native Rachel Whittle continues to bring local talent and Louisiana scenery to the big screen. Through her work as an actress and producer, Whittle is helping showcase the creativity of South Louisiana while creating opportunities for local actors, filmmakers and production crews.
Whittle, known for her starring role in Death Before Dawn, believes filmmaking and her Louisiana roots belong together. Her commitment to producing movies in the community she calls home reflects a passion that goes beyond entertainment. It is also a reminder that God can use the gifts and opportunities He gives us to make a difference right where we are planted.
As 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us, “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another.” Whittle’s journey demonstrates how creative gifts can be shared with others and used to build something meaningful within a community.
A CHRISTMAS MOVIE WITH A HOMETOWN TOUCH
In 2025, Whittle joined fellow Lafayette native Marco Baez in Love Reins at Christmas, a wholesome holiday film set in Lafayette, Sunset and surrounding Louisiana communities. The production captures the beauty of Acadiana while offering families a heartwarming Christmas story to enjoy together.
The movie is now available through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play and DISH, giving audiences an opportunity to experience a little piece of South Louisiana from wherever they call home.
Several scenes were filmed at Guidry Organic Farms, a family-owned business associated with Whittle’s family that offers a variety of products. The location adds another authentic hometown connection to a film that celebrates local people and places.
In a world where families are constantly searching for meaningful entertainment, wholesome productions can provide opportunities to spend time together and celebrate the joy of the season. Romans 12:10 encourages believers to “be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love.” That spirit of love and togetherness is something families can carry into their holiday traditions.
DEATH BEFORE DAWN SPOTLIGHTS ACADIANA CREATIVITY
Whittle’s latest project, Death Before Dawn, takes audiences in a different direction, combining action, suspense and horror. Whittle stars as an agent dealing with professional challenges, difficulties at home and a mysterious and frightening presence.
As producer, she has also helped bring together an impressive local production team. According to Whittle, approximately 85 percent of the cast and crew are from the local area.
“Lafayette is home, and it’s a dream come true to make films here,” Whittle said. “There are so many talented creatives right here in Acadiana.”
That statement reflects an important message for the community: talent, creativity and opportunity are not limited to major entertainment centers. Sometimes extraordinary things begin right in our own backyards.
A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION IN OPELOUSAS
St. Landry Cinema in Opelousas is scheduled to host screenings of Death Before Dawn at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, with a question-and-answer session also planned. Audiences will have an opportunity to see the production and hear more about the creative work behind the film.
FAITH, PURPOSE AND THE GIFTS GOD GIVES
Proverbs 16:3 tells us, “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” Whittle’s dedication to pursuing her calling while investing in her hometown offers an encouraging example of perseverance and purpose.
CAST NEWS celebrates the local creatives, families and businesses helping Acadiana shine. May their efforts encourage others to discover their own gifts and use them to strengthen their communities.
