Residents along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts should prepare for a busy hurricane season this year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In their recently released forecast, NOAA predicts an “above-normal” season with a higher-than-average chance of storms developing into hurricanes.
The forecast predicts 17 to 25 named storms (winds exceeding 39 mph) could form in the Atlantic basin this season, with 8 to 13 escalating into hurricanes (winds exceeding 74 mph). The most concerning aspect is the possibility of 4 to 7 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher, with winds exceeding 111 mph). This is the highest number of named storms ever predicted by NOAA in a May forecast.
Several factors are contributing to the expected increase in activity. Warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic provide fuel for storm formation. Additionally, the absence of El Niño, a weather pattern that typically suppresses hurricane activity, and the potential development of La Niña, which can enhance hurricane development, are contributing factors.
“This is a reminder that everyone in coastal areas needs to be prepared regardless of where they live,” said Gerry Bell, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “It only takes one storm to make it a bad season.”
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. With the season approaching, here are some steps you can take to prepare:
- Develop a hurricane plan: Discuss evacuation routes, communication plans, and sheltering options with your family.
- Assemble an emergency kit: Stock up on non-perishable food, water, medications, first-aid supplies, and other essentials.
- Stay informed: Monitor weather forecasts and follow instructions from local officials.
- Consider flood insurance: Standard homeowners insurance may not cover flood damage.
By taking proactive steps now, you can ensure your family is prepared to weather any storms that may come your way.
