A Woman of Strength: Today, July 23rd, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Bridget of Sweden. This remarkable woman, born in 1303, defied societal expectations and emerged as a powerful voice for faith and social justice. Her life serves as an inspiration, echoing Proverbs 31:10: “A wife of noble character who can find? Her value is far beyond rubies.”
A Life of Devotion: Bridget was raised in a deeply religious household. Even as a young girl, she displayed exceptional piety and a strong commitment to her faith. Following her marriage, the death of her husband and the raising of eight children (including Saint Catherine of Sweden), Bridget experienced profound spiritual experiences, including visions of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. These experiences fueled her dedication to prayer and deepened her understanding of the Passion of Christ.
Championing Justice: Bridget’s faith extended beyond personal piety. She was a fierce advocate for reform within the Church and a champion for the poor and marginalized. Her unwavering commitment to social justice echoes Micah 6:8: “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Bridget even undertook a pilgrimage to Rome to advocate for Church reforms, demonstrating her courage and unwavering faith.
A Legacy of Service: Saint Bridget’s legacy lives on through the Order of the Most Holy Savior (Bridgettines), which she founded. This monastic order continues to serve as a beacon of prayer, scholarship, and social service with over 800 members worldwide.
