The Reality of Spiritual Warfare

Many new believers are often surprised to find that the Christian life is not without conflict. Charles Finney, a renowned evangelist, once answered the question about the existence of a literal devil by saying, “You try opposing him for a while, and you will see if he’s real or not.” Indeed, as we walk with Christ and strive to stay in God’s will, the presence of spiritual opposition becomes clear. The Bible warns us in 1 Corinthians 10:12, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” This reminds us of the constant spiritual battle we face, where victory or defeat depends on our reliance on Christ.

A Life of Conflict and Warfare

Following Christ is not a life of ease but one of spiritual warfare. The moment we choose to follow Jesus, we gain a new enemy: Satan. Scripture describes the Devil as a powerful adversary, one who actively seeks to pull us away from God’s path. As believers, we must choose whether we will be victorious or victims on the spiritual battlefield. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” Victory comes not by our own strength but by standing firm in Christ’s finished work on the cross.

Standing Firm in Christ’s Power

The closer we stay to the Lord, the more secure we are in this spiritual battle. Engaging the enemy on our own strength is futile, but when we stand in the power of the Lord, we can resist the devil (James 4:7). Christ’s victory on the cross is our source of strength and protection.

A Prayer for Spiritual Strength

Heavenly Father, we come to You recognizing the reality of spiritual warfare. Strengthen us to stand firm in Your power and not rely on our own strength. Help us to stay close to You, knowing that in You, we have victory over every attack of the enemy. Protect and guide those who are struggling on the spiritual battlefield. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
