A Growing Crisis in the Service Industry The service industry is known for its high-pressure environment, long hours, and late-night shifts, often leading many workers to turn to alcohol and drugs as a way to cope. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, employees in this field are particularly vulnerable to substance abuse. Recognizing the urgent need for support, Lafayette natives Mandi Veltin and Ben Leger have taken action by launching a local chapter of Ben’s Friends, a nationwide organization offering fellowship and recovery support.
A Journey Toward Healing Both Veltin and Leger understand firsthand the struggles of addiction within the restaurant industry. With alcohol flowing freely and social norms encouraging post-shift drinks, it became easy to fall into destructive habits. After more than two decades in the industry, Leger’s battle with alcohol led to liver failure, and Veltin realized her own dependence on drinking, especially after becoming a mother. Their turning point came when they discovered Ben’s Friends, an organization founded in honor of chef Ben Murray, who tragically lost his life to alcoholism.
Faith and Fellowship in Recovery Ben’s Friends provides a space where service industry workers can find hope and support. Just as Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” these meetings create a community where members encourage each other on their path to sobriety. Veltin and Leger have witnessed the power of shared experiences and the strength that comes from fellowship, offering new hope for those who feel trapped in addiction.
A Light in the Darkness In a state like Louisiana, where hospitality and alcohol are deeply intertwined, choosing sobriety can seem impossible. But as 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” With God’s strength and the support of their peers, those in recovery can find a new way forward. Through Ben’s Friends, Veltin and Leger are becoming the change they once sought, proving that redemption and healing are possible.
A Prayer for Healing and Strength Heavenly Father, We lift up the service industry workers in Lafayette and beyond who are battling addiction. We pray for strength, healing, and hope for those who feel lost. May they find support, love, and encouragement through Ben’s Friends and within their community. Lord, remind them that they are never alone and that Your grace is always enough. We ask for Your blessings upon Mandi Veltin, Ben Leger, and all who work tirelessly to bring light to those struggling in darkness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
