Bridging the Gap Between Education and the Workforce On a typical Monday morning, 13-year-old Keelan Duncan would be sitting in a classroom. But today, he is stepping into the workforce, gaining hands-on experience that may shape his future. As part of a new initiative at Vermilion Charter Academy, Duncan and his peers are exploring real-world careers that align with their interests, preparing them for life beyond school. Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” This program embodies that principle by exposing students to career pathways early in life.
A Day in the Life of a Professional Duncan had the opportunity to shadow employees at Acadian Contractors, a construction company in Abbeville. Throughout the day, he observed the various roles within the company, learning about safety protocols and the importance of teamwork in a professional setting. “I got to see all the jobs and how they affect the world,” Duncan said, reflecting on the experience. Similarly, Colossians 3:23 encourages diligence in work: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Expanding Career Horizons The program is designed to help students make informed career decisions by exposing them to a variety of professions. Cecily Hebert, land personnel coordinator at Acadian Contractors, highlighted the significance of this initiative. “We have fitters, riggers, welders, and craftsmen. I was excited to show someone from the younger generation how everything works in our different divisions,” Hebert said.
A Prayer for the Future of Our Students Heavenly Father, We thank You for the opportunities given to the students of Vermilion Charter Academy. May their experiences guide them in discovering their purpose and talents. Bless their mentors, teachers, and the professionals who invest in their futures. Lead them on a path of wisdom, integrity, and success, knowing that all good things come from You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
