A Life-Changing Invention
Ten-year-old Kendyl Pool, born profoundly deaf due to inner ear malformations, has found new hope through groundbreaking technology. Her mother, Bri, discovered high-tech caption glasses on a social media platform, which transcribe speech in real time and display words on the lenses. As a surprise birthday gift, Bri presented these glasses to Kendyl, who was overwhelmed with emotion upon realizing she could “see” conversations for the first time. “She was just blown away,” Bri said. “She even cried a little bit because she couldn’t believe she could see what I was saying right in front of her.”
Technology That Transforms Lives
The HearView caption glasses connect via Bluetooth to an app that uses voice recognition technology, accurately transcribing spoken words onto a small screen embedded inside the lenses. This allows Kendyl to follow conversations more easily and even practice her own speech by checking if her words appear correctly on the screen. “She’ll say ‘Mom, Mom, Mom’ and wait to see if it pops up. When it does, she gets so excited,” Bri shared.
Building Confidence and Inclusion
As the only deaf person in her family, Kendyl has sometimes struggled with feeling different. However, these glasses have given her a newfound sense of confidence. She can now participate in more social activities and communicate with people who do not know ASL. The glasses also store conversations in the app, allowing Kendyl to review important discussions later, such as instructions from teachers or doctors. This advancement exemplifies Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
A Step Toward Greater Accessibility
For years, captions on screens have been inaccurate or delayed, limiting accessibility for the deaf community. Bri tested these glasses herself, speaking quickly and using different phrases, and was amazed by their accuracy. “This is a huge step for inclusion. These glasses provide full access to conversations in real time, and that is life-changing,” she said. Such breakthroughs remind us of Mark 7:37: “People were overwhelmed with amazement. ‘He has done everything well,’ they said. ‘He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.'”
A Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, We thank You for the gift of innovation that brings hope and inclusion to those facing challenges. May Kendyl and others who benefit from these advancements find joy, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Bless the hands that create these technologies, and may they continue to make the world more accessible for all. Let this be a reminder that through You, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Amen.
