Lafayette’s Touch-a-Truck Event Brings Families Together for Hands-On Learning

Lafayette’s second annual Touch-a-Truck event proved to be a major success, drawing families from across the community for a day of fun and learning. Hosted by the Junior League of Lafayette, the event featured over 75 trucks, offering children the opportunity to climb aboard, honk horns, and discover the inner workings of various vehicles. From monster trucks to excavators, families engaged with vehicles used in daily life, from emergency response to construction.

A Joyous Occasion for Children and Parents

For many children, the event was a dream come true. “I love trucks!” exclaimed one young boy, his eyes wide with excitement as he explored the trucks. Parents were equally delighted, with some expressing how rare such hands-on opportunities were for their children. “It’s so rare that they get to interact with these vehicles,” shared Angelle Meaux, a parent attending the event. Such experiences give children the chance to learn about the various roles these vehicles play in the community, from saving lives to building infrastructure.

Educational Value and Career Exploration

The event wasn’t just about fun; it also served as an educational tool, helping children explore career fields in transportation, construction, and public service. Ayesha Martin, President of the Junior League of Lafayette, explained how the event introduced children to the different trucks they may not encounter daily. “It’s great to see them explore equipment they don’t typically see on a day-to-day basis,” Martin said, emphasizing how these experiences could spark future interests in these fields.

Supporting the Community Through Fundraising

In addition to offering a fun, educational experience, the event also had a charitable purpose. All proceeds from the event went toward supporting local nonprofit initiatives through the Junior League of Lafayette, helping fund programs such as the diaper bank, period supply programs, and the health wheels cart for Women’s and Children’s health services.
