Lafayette, LA – April 8, 2020 — The City of Lafayette took a heartfelt step toward supporting survivors of sexual violence and child abuse with a special event recognizing the tireless work of local advocates and service providers.
During a visit to the nonprofit organization Hearts of Hope, community members and local leaders came together to learn more about the work being done to support survivors and prevent future abuse. The event offered a rare glimpse into the day-to-day efforts of staff dedicated to providing care, support, and advocacy for those impacted by trauma.
Lafayette Mayor-President, Monique Blanco Boulet, issued a formal proclamation, declaring April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Awareness Month in Lafayette.
“It’s been an eye-opening experience,” the mayor-president said. “Understanding the lingering impacts of trauma on children and families, and how it affects our community as a whole, is crucial. Your work is very important and deeply appreciated.”
The proclamation emphasized the importance of raising awareness, promoting prevention, and building a safer, stronger community for all. By recognizing the month of April in this way, city leaders hope to shine a light on the issues of sexual violence and child abuse, and to highlight the critical support systems available to survivors.
The event also served as a reminder of the collaborative role that government, nonprofits, and the public must play in addressing abuse and trauma. By fostering partnerships and investing in education, prevention, and trauma-informed care, the Lafayette community is taking meaningful steps toward healing and resilience.
The event closed with gratitude to Hearts of Hope and similar organizations for their unwavering commitment to healing and justice.
