Women’s History: A Louisiana Woman’s Fight for a Healthier, Cleaner Future

As Women’s History Month in March has come to a close, we honor the legacy of Clara Baudoin, a Carencro resident whose dedication to environmental advocacy has left a profound impact across Louisiana. Her relentless pursuit of justice for her family and community exemplifies the power of one person’s determination to create change. Baudoin’s journey into activism began in the 1980s when her family faced the harmful effects of the North Dugas Landfill.

A Fight for Health and Safety
Clara Baudoin’s story is rooted in a love for her family and the community. When a landfill opened near her property, Baudoin was alarmed by the toxic fumes affecting her elderly mother’s health. “I decided I needed to take action,” she recalls. In response, she hired an attorney, sued the city of Lafayette, and successfully halted the landfill’s expansion. This victory marked the beginning of her lifelong mission to protect the environment and her community, a mission that aligns with the biblical call to steward God’s creation, as seen in Genesis 2:15: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

Championing Environmental Protection
Baudoin’s efforts extended far beyond her neighborhood. She became a leading voice in Louisiana, advocating for safer waste management practices, revising solid waste regulations, and tackling environmental hazards like oilfield waste and groundwater contamination. Her advocacy work exemplifies Proverbs 31:8-9, which encourages standing up for justice: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

A Message for Future Generations
Baudoin’s advocacy was driven by her belief in protecting resources for future generations. “It’s so wrong to destroy communities through harmful activities,” she said. She encourages others, especially women, to take action for change, no matter how daunting the task may seem. “Take that first step, no matter how scared you are,” she urges, reflecting the courage shown by many biblical figures, including Esther, who acted bravely for the sake of her people.

A Prayer for Change
Lord, we thank You for the bold example of Clara Baudoin, whose faith and determination have made Louisiana a safer, healthier place for all. We ask for Your guidance as we continue to work for justice and environmental protection in our own communities. May we follow Clara’s example and take action for the betterment of our world, remembering Your call to be caretakers of the Earth. Bless all those who work for change, and may they feel Your presence as they strive to make a difference. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
